A 19th century Chinese black lacquer trunk, decorated deer, birds, dwellings and foliage, the interior fitted a lift out tray, 60 cm wide See illustration Condition report Report by GH One large split across the top, from one side to the other. Various other chips and losses as well as dents and scratches to the top. There are also ring marks and dark stains and various losses and rubbing to lacquer and gilding. The sides, front and back have various water stains and the corners are knocked and dented in some places. The back is generally in the best condition, the hinges are slightly loose. Internally the box is in reasonable condition with some small dents and the crack on the top very clearly visible to the underside of the lid. The lacquer is generally in good condition internally. Overall appears to be complete and in saleroom fresh condition but with defects as noted.
A longcase clock, the 33 cm arched square brass dial, with Roman numerals and calendar to the silvered chapter ring, the silvered centre with subsidiary seconds dial, the arch with a phase of the moon and inscribed The Man is yet unborn who duly weighs an hour, signed Thos Harrison, Liverpool, fitted an eight day movement, in a mahogany case, the hood with verre eglomise painted sections, 233 cm high (over finial) See illustration Condition report Report With pendulum and two brass cased weights. Report by RB From a local deceased estate. I have known the client and clock for about 15 years, during which time absolutely no attention whatsoever has been paid to it on running repairs. That being said, it appears at some point to have had quite a lot of restoration work to it. The dial is quite crisp, the blue steel centre to the revolving phase of the moon has light surface rust, the seat board is probably a replacement, and the case cheeks, where it sits, has also been altered. The hood: A small section of the verre eglomise is missing, the finials have been broken, and there is probably missing two roundels to the swan neck section, some damage/loss to the bottom of the inner columns, and slight loss to the capitals also. The trunk door is generally good and straight, and the base is slightly warped and split. Lacks feet. Report by GH More specifically there is a chip of the right hand piece of verre eglomise on the far left hand edge of approx. 1/2 cm. There is also some rubbing and loss to the gilt decoration on these panels. The chip is not visible unless standing on a raised platform. Again, we cannot confirm whether the moon dial works but all of the relevant workings are in place, and the rest of the movement operates.
The uniform, belonging to Lt Col W B Du Pre, including his boots, in his named tin trunk, his epaulettes, and two camp type beds Condition report Report by RB: Very much in an attic stored condition, it is all rather smelly, now generally dirty, several moth holes in box, with paint loss and a paper label Lt Col B B Du Pre, tetworth, the epaulettes appearing in good condition. The two camp beds, dirty, mouldy and musty.
A longcase clock, the 30 cm square brass arched dial having Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and phase of the moon, signed John Spencer, fitted an eight day movement, striking on a bell, in an oak case, 230 cm high (over finial) Condition report Report by MW With pendulum and weights Report by RB From a private client. An attractive dial with leaf engraved decoration to the border, the arch profile does not 100% perfectly fit the arched profile of the hood, the winding arbors are not square or identical, but quite decorative, the movement does not appear to have run for some time, the case is generally good, but requiring some colour putting in to it, especially to the trunk door, with the side cheeks, where the movement sits on the trunk, having been altered. Actually quite a nice looking clock, now requiring some repair and restoration.
A longcase style clock, the 19 cm arched silvered dial with Roman numerals, and subsidiary Chime/Silent, Slow/Fast and Chime on 8 bells/Westminster chime dials, fitted an eight day movement (lacks bells), in an inlaid mahogany case, 192 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by RB Really looks like a bracket clock put onto a dwarf longcase clock type trunk and base, the colour is a pretty good match but not quite 100%. The dial is silvered, and slightly discoloured in parts, both wooden side panels are loose with damage and loss, as is the frame to the back door, strikes on eight gongs but as noted, there are no bells, there are four plates which hold the movement to the case, and these have later/modernish steel screws fixing it. The trunk door is generally good and not warped, the base has a vertical split, which should be easily visible, and there are smaller splits to the sides. The brass finial is damaged where it fits into the top of the case. Not a fusee movement.
A station drop dial wall clock, the 28.5 cm diameter painted dial with Roman numerals and B.R-W., fitted an eight day fusee movement, in a drop dial case, applied an ivorine plaque, G.W.R. 1875, 61 cm high See illustration Provenance: Inherited by the vendor from his uncle, who was station master at Wiveliscombe Condition report With pendulum and key Dial repainted in post-1948 BR-W style Report by RB I take your point about the drop section looking a different colour, but I think it is just the varnish. The area around the ring, the leaf carved sections below and the central panel to the drop section are all very bitumous and crazed, but they do all match in colour. The sides look a good matching colour. I suspect it is just the finish wish is making it look different. It even has traces of paint where it has been painted on a wall and not been removed. Lacks one peg to hold the movement and dial. Generally appears original (with the exception of the B-R-W repainted dial). The lower left brass fixing lug is missing, the pendulum window is not a window as it is wooden. The small hinges on the side and bottom doors are very gummed up, but some appear to be stamped BRW (?). Report by GH Winds and ticks. The dial measures 29 cm diameter. The maximum entire width is 38 cm. The depth is 15.5 cm from the glass to the rear. The height is 61 cm and the width of the trunk is 23 cm.
An early 19th Century Welsh mahogany cased eight day striking long case clock by J Hughes & Co of Carnavon The painted arched dial with moving swan to the open arch, above painted subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, and twin winding holes, between hand painted maidens with dogs, the hood with arched pediment and twin spiral fluted pilasters above the generously proportioned trunk featuring a domed panelled half length door flanked by twin spiral fluted pilasters, above the base panel decorated with twin feathered domed panels flanked by canted corners, raised on short ogee feet, complete with pendulum and two weights, height approx 232cm, width approx 67cm.
A Victorian oak inlaid longcase clock, curly pediment with carved paterae to hood, arched dial flanked by turned columns, painted dial with landscape scenes in arch and spandrels Roman chapter, indistinctly signed by a Cambridge maker, thirty hour movement striking on a bell, short trunk door inlaid with shell patera and later brass knob, flanked by fluted quarter columns, panel below door and skirt to base. 87in (221cm) tall.
A late 19th century thirty day mahogany and inlaid longcase clock, the arch top hood enclosing a painted metal dial plate, with moon phase and subsidiary seconds dial and half moon aperture detailed 'Jos Wilde, Macclesfield', mounted over a pinched waist trunk and plinth base, 225cm high. (pendulum, two weights and three keys)
An 18th century thirty hour fruitwood and pine striking long case clock by Peter Bower of Redlench, the brass 25cm square dial with single hand and bearing brass spandrels with a Roman chapter ring and intervals spaced with fleur de lis, the distressed case has a primitive hood with Doric column side supports, Greek key frieze and cornice with primitive cut-out spade design, the base has shoulder supports, the trunk has evidently been cut down (overall height of the clock 195cm)
