A GEORGE III MAHOGANY EIGHT-DAY LONGCASE CLOCKJ. YORK AND SON, LONDON, CIRCA 1770The five pillar rack and bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic give minutes to outer track, with scroll pierced steel hands and twin-bird-and-urn-cast spandrels to angles, the arch with silvered Strike/Silent selection disc signed J. York & Son, London to circumference flanked by dolphin cast mounts, in a figured mahogany case with concave-sided 'pagoda' superstructure fronted with a shaped foliate pierced fret over break-arch cavetto cornice and brass stop-fluted columns flanking the hinged glazed dial aperture, the sides with rectangular glazed windows and conforming quarter columns set against bargeboards at the rear, the trunk with break-arch door fronted with flame figured veneers within complex mouldings flanked by brass stop-fluted canted angles, the plinth base with concave top moulding over applied mouldings forming a shaped panel to fascia, on moulded double skirt incorporating shaped apron to lower margin.228cm (89.75ins) high, 49.5cm (19.5ins) wide, 25.5cm (10ins) deep. A Joseph Wadham York is recorded in Baillie Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London 1742-69. His son, Thomas, was apprenticed in 1770 and is probably the same maker who is noted as working from Shoe Lane 1799-1804. Condition Report: Movement is complete and in sound original condition. The escape wheel and pallets are 19th century service replacements; the warning wheel to the strike train has been re-pinioned. The clock will almost certainly run in its present slightly dirty/neglected condition however a gentle clean and service is required. The dial is in good original condition with overall discolouration/tarnishing to the silvering; the engraving to the arch disc is a little rubbed form previous silvering. The movement retains its original seatboard which rests on notched-out cheek uprights of the case - this arrangement appears original hence it is most probable that the movement and dial are original to the case. The case is generally in very good original unrestored condition, The upper section of the superstructure has at one point been cut-off (sawn along the lower edge of the fret) but then re-applied; the top finial is missing. The backboard has a butt-joint down the centre which has now become unstuck and there is a vertical section of moulding missing from the plinth fascia (left hand edge). Otherwise faults to the case are limited to historic bumps, scuffs (including a filled scuff to right hand sde), chips, bruises and historic localised shrinkage including the trunk door which has a slight warp.Clock has pendulum, two weights, a winder and a case key.
