the correspondence is all housed in his original khaki painted travel trunk with Egyptian army brass plaque to the interior. The case has his details painted to the front and lid along with old paper shipping labels etc. Amongst the paperwork is his original officers service record book which lists his appointments and awards received including that of the Victoria Cross. Also his British Army of the Rhine 1920’s identity card which has a picture of Roberts in uniform, the Victoria Cross ribbon can clearly be seen in the picture. Other items include various pre war letters, wartime trench signal messages, permit to travel to the UK to receive the Distinguished Service Order from the King dated 14th January 1916. And a number of post war share certificates and associated personal and military paperwork. One of the most interesting items in the grouping is a letter written to him by another officer of the Worcestershire Regiment from the middle east campaign in 1916, the letter is extremely well written and gives great detail about the campaign and actions with the Turkish forces, the letter starts with “Cheeroh, Cully! Now then you birds in France take a pull at yourselves!! Get a move on there, you know you don’t see life at all where you are – come over here! All the same there is no Battn on gods earth like the dear old 1st, and often the time I wish I was back with you fellers once more, slogging down the La Bassée road or trench mortoring the Boches around the “Ducks Bill” or making one of those famous 29th counter attacks on the “Garden” at Estaires!! Ah yes those were top whole days!” The letter goes on to describe the retreat from Cape Helles, “The day before we evacuated Helles, we were fair pounded to hell by the Turkish guns for 51/2 hours solid, finishing up with ½ hours intense bombardment by everything from 8.2’s down to 15 pounders. It was very reminiscent of our bombardment at Neuve Chapelle before the assault, but not quite so bad – far fewer guns, but all concentrated on 3 regts, of which we were the centre one. All our guns had been evacuated bar 4, so we couldn’t reply”. The letter also talks about engagement with the Turkish troops and uncomplimentary views on their fighting ability. He also mentions and illustrates a weapon he took from a dead Turkish soldier. His Victoria Cross was awarded during the German Spring Offensive of 1918, the action took place west of the Somme and Pargny. The register for the Victoria Cross and The George Cross gives the following details; “When the German Spring offensive opened on 21 March 1918, XIX Corps was in the line south of Peronne. 8th division was moved towards the front on 22 March but the British were being pushed steadily back. On the 23rd Peronne fell and the British, withdrawing across the Somme and its accompanying canal, sought to hold a line to the south along the west bank of the river. At about 8pm, Lieutenant Colonel F C Roberts, 1st Battalion The Worcestershire regiment, became aware that the Germans had crossed the Somme and occupied Pargny, south of where the Amiens to St Quentin road crossed the river. Roberts at once assembled a small force, attacked the enemy and drove the surviving Germans across Pargny bridge. On the 25th XIX Corps was forced back from the canal and in fighting on the 27th Roberts was wounded.
