A COPPER-RED-DECORATED BLUE AND WHITE ‘DEER’ BOWL, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIODChina, 1735-1796. The deep rounded sides rising to an everted rim, the sides painted in rich tones of copper red and underglaze blue with two deer, the doe reclining under a pine tree while the stag stands on the other side of the trunk, with two red bats swooping on the reverse. The three scrolls finely painted with various depictions of luohan, including one riding a dragon, another seated on a gnarled withering tree trunk and exhaling qi as two demons push him forward, and a third riding a tiger and accompanied by two attendants. Each with a silk brocade frame and mounted as a hanging scroll. AN INDIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, 17TH-18TH CENTURYSouth India, Maharashtra. The four-armed deity seated in lalitasana on a circular lotus throne raised on a flat square base, holding in his hands an axe, trident, broken tusk, and a bowl of sweets which he samples with his trunk, wearing a short striated dhoti, sacred thread around his portly waist, adorned with ornaments, and wearing a conical tiered head dress.Provenance: Art of the Past, New York. Collection Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Sharpe, Strasbourg, France, acquired from the above in 2001. A copy of an original letter, stating the land of origin as South India and dating the piece to the 18th century, with a description containing the story about Ganesha’s broken tusk, accompanies this lot.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, minuscule nicks, occasional light scratches, the base with dents.Weight: 1,701 gDimensions: Height 16 cmIn Puranic literature, there is an amusing story about Ganesha’s broken tusk: After feasting on sweets one day, Ganesha was returning home on his mount, a mouse. The poor mouse, unable to bear Ganesha’s weight, dropped the deity and as a result, Ganesha’s stomach burst open spilling sweets. The moon witnessed this scene from the sky and burst into laughter. A collection of items relating to the family of Cottie (White) Yeats, including:- A gold locket enclosing a portrait of a moustachioed gentleman, Victorian, middle-aged, evidently John Philip White, Cottie's father (see envelope);- Four various rings, hallmarked;- An envelope inscribed in Cottie's hand, 'Mamma & Father / John Philip White / Georgina White', containing an oval miniature portrait of a Victorian lady, presumably Georgina; also death notice of Georgina White wrapped in mourning paper;- An envelope inscribed in Cottie's hand, 'Georgina White / Mamma's wedding ring etc., old letters of mine to her as a child - announcement of death - 1934', containing three childish letters from Cottie to Mama, circa 1874-5. The hood with an arched door flanked on each side by a reeded column, enclosing a 14" dial painted with rising moonphase in the arch, floral spandrels, subsidiary dial for seconds and date, signed 'Jn Parr, Liverpool', above a short trunk door, with an oval flame-figured panel below 4 Gothic arches, the 8-day movement with anchor escapement, striking on a bell, with door key, winder, two weights and pendulum, approximately 237cm highCondition report: Not working in vendor's home. Lacking 3 reeded sections on left pillar on trunk. Lacking return beads on base and back feet. Some damage around these areas. Minor scratches, dents and chips consistent with age and use. Lacking finials.
A Billi B mahogany cased grandmother clock, the brass break arch dial with astronomical date feature, dial with foliate spandrels, bearing Roman numerals, two train eight day movement with Westminster chime on eleven rods, the case hood with break arch pediment and central brass ball, trunk with glazed door, raised on a plinth base, with pendulum, 195cm high.
William Bird of Seagrave. A Georgian oak long case clock, the square brass dial with circular chapter ring bearing Roman numerals, centrally foliate engraved, with reserve date aperture, single train movement, with bell strike, the pedimented hood above a straight trunk, the door with cross banding and sun paterea inlay, raised on a plinth base, with pendulum and key, 194cm high.
Nelson of Market Deeping. A George III oak and cross banded long case clock, the painted break arch dial bearing Arabic numerals, the hands formed as eagles atop a globe, subsidiary seconds dial, eight day two train movement with bell strike, the case hood with broken arch pediment, and fluted columns, trunk with quarter fluted pilasters, raised on a plain base and bracket feet, with pendulum, weights and key, 215cm high.
