An impressive late 19th century Elkington silver plated centrepiece, in the form of an oak tree upon which stands a mature stag with its head raised eating the vegetation, below a fawn standing, the tree trunk rising and splitting in two, heavily decorated with oak leaves and acorns extending all over the branches reaching up to a layer of six oak leaf supports, at the extensions of these having fitted alternately three candle holders and three oil light holders, rising up from within the centre of this a canopy of oak leaves and acorns leaving a depression for a floral decoration, replated, height approx 76cm
AN OAK AND MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK by Clark, Cerne Abbas, the crossbanded trunk door surmounted by a hood with swan-neck pediment, the square painted dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture with thirty hour movement, 79" Tribe and Whatmoor record a number of clockmakers by the name of Clark working in Cerne Abbas during the 18th/19th centuries and this clock is probably the work of either Robert Clark, 1791-1861 or William Clark, 1793-1823.

A James Milner is recorded in Britten's 'Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers' as working in London from 1737.

A Thomas Vennall is recorded in Loomes, Brian 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Vol 2' as working from Deal 1826-9. This clock may well be an earlier example by this maker or by a relative.

A movement and dial by his father is also included in the sale, Lot 578.

The scene to the arch is probably taken from an engraving by Bertolozzi after Thomas Barker of Bath entitled 'The Old Woodman', the model was called George Kelston who was well known in the Bath area in the 1790s. Pear & Son, Stafford' within gilt numeral applied silvered chapter ring and female mask and scroll pattern spandrel applied angles, with moonphase to arch, the swan neck pedimented case with Corinthian pilasters to hood over oval fan cartouche centred trunk door and conforming plinth base with bracket feet, 234cm high. The inside is pasted with a presentation certificate from Tom Pear Senior to his son, Thomas William Pear, on the event of his marriage in 1910, it has remained in the same family since.
