* Harington Family Accounts Books. An archive of Harington family manuscript accounts books and related, circa 1792-1863, including a household inventory for 1797, a group of five mid-19th century numbered volumes relating to a trust fund, various accounts books, largely from the period 1790s to 1820, the two earliest folio ledgers covering the period 1792-7, the indexes listing various names and estates, plus lottery tickets, India insurance, furniture, sheep charges, servants’ wages, etc., a total of 33 volumes, various bindings and sizes, the collection contained in an old solicitor’s tin trunk (Qty: a tin trunk)NOTESSee also lots 219, 222 & 230.
* Harington Family Papers. An assorted collection of manuscript ephemera and printed material, etc., relating to the Harington family, mostly 18th & 19th century, but including deeds and legal correspondence from assorted family affairs, comprising approximately 20 folding vellum deeds (generally soiled), numerous bundles of folded and tied legal letters, sundry old newspapers, a few printed books including the Law List for 1878 with ownership stamp of N.J. Harington, a Victorian commonplace book, with approximately 80 leaves of biblical quotations and notes and armorial bookplate of the Harington family, a sammelband of mid-19th century autograph letters from members of the Harington family, including 2 letters written by Cecilia, the wife of the Reverend Richard Harington DD, principal of Brasenose College, Oxon, in her childhood, 3 written in his childhood by Richard Harington, the eldest son, 2 by Charles Harington, his brother, and one by Margaret Harington, and then many from the Reverend Richard Harington to his eldest son Richard at Eton, plus a Victorian barrister’s wig and gown, the wig in an enameled tin box with ownership name of John Harington to lid, the gown in a velvet sack with embroidered initials for Sir Nicholas J. Harington, the archive largely contained in a solicitor’s tin trunk with stamped name of Sir Richard Harington, and the newspapers contained in a very worn cloth-covered wooden chest with brass handle and the gilt name of Sir R[ichard] Harington still visible (Qty: a tin trunk + box)NOTESThe Harington Baronetcy, of Ridlington in the County of Rutland, created in 1611 for Sir James Harington (1542-1614), younger brother of John Harington, 1st Baron Harington of Exton. The archive here present and in the following lot largely relates to the 8th to 12th Baronets, respectively Sir John Harington (1760-1831), Sir James Harington (1788-1835), Sir John Edward Harington (1821-1877), Sir Richard Harington (1835-1911) and Sir Richard Harington (1861-1931). Sir Richard Harington, 12th Baronet, was called to the Bar in 1886 and practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment in Bengal in 1899. See also lots 220, 222 & 230.
A late 18th Century German porcelain scent bottle, perhaps Kloster Veilsdorf, modelled as a boy and kid around a vine hung tree trunk, painted in enamels and gilt, the later hinged gilt-metal mounts cast as bark; together with another similar German porcelain scent bottle, circa 1780, perhaps Kelsterbach, in the white, with silver mount and stopper, each 7cm high/Provenance: Spetchley Park CONDITION REPORT: 477:The first; tiny chip to tip of one horn of goat. Several small chips to footrim and minor losses to grapes and leaves. The white example; restoration to goats ear and back foot. Chipping to footrim.

A LATE 17TH CENTURY STYLE EIGHT DAY OAK LONGCASE CLOCK, the hood with moulded pediment and blind fret, carved heart, square hood door enclosing brass 23.5cm/9 1/4'' dial, brass boys and crown spandrels, Roman numerals, dial named 'John Stokes', bell strike, plain trunk to a shortened plinth base, height 197cm x max width 47cm, with pendulum, two weights and winding key (condition: both the case and the movement have been restored/repaired and altered over time, hands replaced, not seen working)
