A Plan for a Navigation Chiefly by Canal from Longbridge near Burslem in the County of Stafford to Newcastle, Lichfield and Tamworth, and to Wilden in the County of Derby, by James Brindley, Revis'd and Approv'd by John Smeaton, 1760, manuscript plan drawn by Hugh Henshall, ink on paper with map showing canal, river, occasional churches and dwellings plus Lichfield Cathedral, title cartouche, compass rose and columns of copperplate writing giving details of landowners, ink-ruled border, vertical central crease, somewhat dust soiled and numerous marginal splits and nicks but without loss of text, a few crude paper repairs to verso, two old ink notes to verso noting 'The original plan of the Grand Trunk drawn by H. Henshall from which the plate was engraved', 54.5 x 75cm Hugh Henshall (1734-1816) was an English civil engineer, noted for his work on canals. Henshall worked with Brindley and John Smeaton in 1758 to survey the proposed Trent and Mersey (Grand Trunk) Canal. (1)

(illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2166 The right hand swan neck, to the pediment has been broken and re glued, visible, applied roundels, urn finial possibly replaced, inlay to the frieze once section missing left hand angle upright measures approx: 5 x 0.5cm, small piece of cross banding missing to glazed door border approx: 2 x 2cm, door sits slightly proud of the cabinet, original back board, small piece of beading missing to the raised panel right hand side angle approx: 5cm, case good colour additional break to the left hand swan neck, appearing on the mahogany veneer front, replaced seat board now with later angled brackets supporting it to the back board, movement working with two weights and pendulum.

CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2170 The clock has been subject to an extensive project of restoration and renovation. The hood, replaced and re gilded finials, replaced brass rosette roundels, restoration to the swan neck cornice, signs of a break running left to right in two places and at the top beneath the arch, new strengthening blocks applied at the back, restoration to the lower part of left hand side and the right hand side, replaced cheek boards to the arch and to the left and right sides and to the bottom, glazed door replaced. Movement completely overhauled and polished, dial and movement possible associated signs of additional blocks below the seat board, dial polished, restoration to the frieze above the dental work on the trunk, piece inset approx. 26 x 3.5cm, repair to the veneer on the left hand side angle.

CONDITION REPORT: Hands replaced and re-glued, silvered chaptering with Roman numerals possibly replaced, certainly re-glued and restored, the case - cavetto cornice in good condition, original glass panel, glass lenticle possibly added later, full length back board, good colour.

(illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2161 The case, restoration to the the right hand swan neck, half way down, possibly lacking rosettes to the roundels at the tips of the swan neck, minor piece of veneer missing left hand side of frieze above left hand baluster column 1.5 x 1cm , some bruising to the left hand baluster column, possible old breaks to each baluster column, just above the vase shaped baluster where it joins the long slender baluster, traces of old glue and restoration on the left hand side of the top baluster, re veneering to the right hand angle of the arched glazed door where the hinge is attached, minor slither of veneer right hand side to the right of the column 1 x 1.5cm, trunk door well figured no warp, good feather figuring to the panel above the door, lower panel possibly replaced veneer inside of the cross banding small section left hand side 3 x 1cm, original back board with blocks, the arched dial some crackling to the white enamel, some rubbing to the gilt decoration to the spandrels, movement complete with pendulum.
