A 'Jenny Lind' leather stagecoach trunk,19th century and later, with the original label 'William Wall's Son', fitted with leather straps and a handle to either end,82cm wide48cm deep43cm highThis stagecoach trunk, with the distinctive Jenny Lind hourglass shape, is believed to date back to the 19th century. The 'Swedish Nightingale' Jenny Lind was given a trunk of this style while touring America with the famous circus owner P T Barnum in the 1850s. Lind's trunk was then sold on, advertised as 'Jenny Lind's trunk' and, ever since, these trunks have been associated with the Swedish singer. The original leather has been carefully restored by a master saddler and includes a label found on the case belonging to 'William Wall’s and Son', a firm based in New York in the late 19th century. With the structure reinforced, a handmade leather compartment made, and the lining replaced with ticking fabric, the trunk is now set to go back on its travels once more!Condition report: This lot was featured on 'Salvage Hunters: The Restorers' (Discovery Network - Quest).Salvage Hunters: The Restorers is a popular prime time show broadcast on the Discovery Network (Quest), where industry experts seek out lots in need of a little TLC and restore them to their former glory. Original vintage propaganda poster for the post-war US sponsored European Recovery Program (1948) known as the Marshall plan - ERP Inter-European Cooperation, Inter-European Prosperity / Cooperation Intereuropeenne, Prosperite Intereuropeenne. Bold design by French artist Pierre Cauchat depicting an old, almost dead tree. Growing from one branch is a single a young shoot with leaves and a flower. The top of the main trunk of the tree is bandaged with a ribbon decorated with the flags of European countries. All on a dark blue and black background with text predominantly in white with some multicoloured letters. This design was submitted to the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held by NATO in Europe for the Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan (officially the European Recovery Program, ERP) was an American initiative passed in 1948 to aid Western Europe, in which the United States gave over $12 billion (nearly $100 billion in 2018 US dollars) in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War II. Replacing the previous Morgenthau Plan, it operated for four years beginning on April 3, 1948. The goals of the United States were to rebuild war-torn regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, improve European prosperity, and prevent the spread of Communism. The Marshall Plan required a reduction of interstate barriers, a dropping of many regulations, and encouraged an increase in productivity, as well as the adoption of modern business procedures. Good condition, creasing on edges, tears, repaired tears. Country of issue: Netherlands, designer: Pierre Cauchat, size (cm): 75x54.5, year of printing: 1950
