During his 35-years career as a technician and later a survey officer with British Telecom, Alf spent a great deal of time visiting various film studios and film sets.Provenance: From The Collection of Alf Stanton (1937-2024).Alf Stantons greatest hero was Errol Flynn and when he heard that an auction at Lots Road, Chelsea, were selling a trunk that had been found on Errol Flynns yacht, The Zaca, he thought it must be fate as this was the street he had grown up on as a child.When the trunk failed to sell in the auction, Alf approached the auctioneer and purchased two of the items from the trunk separately a practice sword from MGM Studios and a feather wrapped together with a strip of leather which Alf recognised as the feathers worn in Errol Flynns hat during Robin Hood.Alf and his wife, Ann, attended many functions at film studios both in the UK. and America where they met the stars of stage and screen, including Tony Curtis on multiple occasions, Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds, Norman Wisdom and many others.During their numerous trips to America Alf and Ann travelled to Carmel to see Doris Day and her family and within Alfs collection are many items that were personally gifted to him by Doris Day, Tony Curtis, Debbie Reynolds, Norman Wisdom, the cast of the Carry On films, and many television shows.
Erroll Flynn's original rehearsal sword from MGM Studios, believed to have been used in the rehearsals for movies after 1954 when Flynn was working for MGM. Fencing épée sword, with stamp of makers Leon Paul (est. 1921) on guard, attached to guard tag marked 'MGM STUDIO PROPERTY CULVER CITY CAL.', handle with grip. Total length of sword 106 cm, blade length 86cm. Erroll Flynn was a skilled and accomplished swordsman, on and off screen. As an actor, he gained fame for his roles in films like The Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood, and The Mark of Zorro, where he performed many of his own sword fighting stunts. With a passion for fencing that he perfected through years of dedicated practice, Flynn worked closely with expert sword masters and choreographers to develop his skills. Contemporaries describing him as possessing excellent footwork, coordination, and reflexes. Off-screen, Flynn was an avid fencer who competed in tournaments and exhibitions, often besting professional fencers with his skill and technique. He was known to carry his fencing foils with him and would engage in friendly matches and demonstrations, cementing his reputation as one of the most talented swordsmen in Hollywood's golden age.
