Royal Interest: A square of lace that has been handed down through the family of the vendor, it came from Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight and was reputed to have been part of the lace veiling that shrouded HM Queen Victoria as she lay in her coffin in January 1901, the lace measures; 16 x 27½ inches approx, small hole in the centre The original provenance is included in the lot, dated 01/02/1901I was given the Lace and note by my Grandmother many decades ago. I have kept it stored in a trunk in which I keep special items.Recently I was going through the trunk and showing my daughter the items that had come down through the family. She suggested that I should show the lace with note to an Antiques Specialist as it looked like it might be of historical importance and interest.I approached Hanson’s who put me in touch with Notty as she has years of experience in such items. The Lace I think was inherited down through my Grandfathers family and came into my Grandmothers possession after his death in 1978.My Grandfather kept a family journal that dates back to the 1800s . The journal gives a great incite into his branch of the family through photographs, newspaper clippings, announcements and a copy of his family tree titled “ Extract from the Genealogical Magazine for 1899. The Royal Decent of Carlyon”. (The family name carried on through the generations - myself, daughter and grandson included). The Lace must have been given to a relative of my Great Grandparents generation either through an Army connection as several members of the family were in the Indian Army or possibly one of my ancestors was a companion lady to Queen Victoria !!I have always been fascinated by family history, my Grandmother shared incites and family stories with me and gave me many photos and special items. The Lace is historically interesting, so just sitting in my trunk seems a waste. It needs to be seen and appreciated, hence my reason for selling itPlease note this Lot will need to be collected from Head Office in Etwall

C.V.O. Deceased, Halton House Tring'. 1918. Listed as 'A clock in ormolu case, supported by a figure of an elephant, £15.0.0.' Catalogue note The 18th century was a period of great exploration and the discoveries made were often reflected in the decorative arts of the period. This was especially true in France during the reign of Louis XV where the skills of the master clockmakers, ebenistes, bronziers and ceramicists were often combined to create fantastical objects such as the clock being offered here. The animals used in the creations varied widely and eventually included elephants, rhinoceroses and ostriches, as well as the more recognisable bulls and wild boars. The earliest examples of these exotic clocks date to the mid-1740s but their popularity reached its zenith in the 1750s and lasted to the early 1760s. The modelling of the elephant used in this clock is likely to have its origins in the Japanese Kakiemon porcelain models of the late 17th century such as those that can be seen at Burghley House in Lincolnshire (Porcelain from Palaces, Exhibition Catalogue, British Museum, 6 July - 4 November 1990, p.178, no.160), and others were found across the European Courts. A prominent maker of clock cases was Joseph de Saint-Germain (maitre in 1750). He was one of the most celebrated bronziers of his age and championed the Rococo style. See H. Ottomeyer / P. Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, p.123. pl.2.8.3., for an elephant clock by Saint-Germain very similar to our clock. A related clock formerly in the Jones Collection can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number: 1008:1-1882.
