attributed to Glasgow circa 1760 single mark H&M, of typical baluster form engraved crest and motto, scroll handle with leaf clasping, spreading circular foot(10.5cm high, 9.5oz)The crest and motto is probably for the Lauder family formerly of Belhaven and West Barnes in East Lothian. The motto ‘Repullulat’ translates as ‘It buds afresh’ which relates to the tree being “an old tree budding proper”. However if the crest was read as “The trunk of an oak sprouting out proper” it could relate to the Laurie family also from East Lothian and Berwickshire.
unmarked, the ebony cylindrical shaft set with royal crown to top and simple collar to base, the upper section with applied lion rampant above a Ducal coronet, the reverse with oak tree with saw through trunk (for Hamilton), the central section with applied presentation band engraved Victoria Queen, Alexander 10 th Duke of Hamilton Hereditary Keeper, Presented to John Rogers Esquire, Baillie of the Abbey of Holyrood House, by the High Constables, Thomas Miller Moderator 1851’, in fitted velvet lined glazed domed oak display case(66cm long )Footnote: Note: Although Tipstaffs and Batons of office are encountered with regularity presentation examples or indeed such large examples as this are extremely rare. To find one with such direct Royal and Ducal connection as this appears to be virtually unique. The presentation itself is still somewhat of a mystery. It can safely be assumed that Thomas Miller must have had a long career within the Abbey of Holyrood House and perhaps his time as Moderator in 1851 was the end of this illustrious career. No other such examples presented to Moderators can be traced so this is by no means a standard presentation to Moderators of the Abbey when they stand down. For a similarly large example from the Barony Burgh of Portsburgh, intriguingly last presented in 1851 as well, see ‘Jewellery & Silver’, Bonhams Edinburgh 7 th December 2011 lot 535 (sold £7500)

A Regency tortoiseshell veneered tea caddy inlaid in mother of pearl with chinoiserie decorated depicting pagodas in a landscape to the shallow bow front, the lid of pagoda form opening a reveal a two section interior, raised on turned bone bun feet, 20.5 cm wide x 13.2 cm deep x 15.75 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Whilst basically sound throughout and a good looking piece, there are several areas of minor loss, particularly to two of the leaves to the bow front and the trunk of the palm tree second from left. There is also damage to the corners of the tortoiseshell to the base on all four corners. See images. Minor cracks looking at the back below the left hinge and to the right of the right hinge vertically. There is also a crack to the turned bone foot looking from the back - the right hand side. There are several areas where the wirework has worked loose, particularly to the corners. See images for further detail. The interior zinc lining has deteriorated to mainly powder in both sides. The piece could arguably do with a good clean and sympathetic restoration though the overall look is again good. See images for further detail.
