Louis XV-Elefanten-KaminuhrHöhe: 42 cm. Breite: 30,5 cm. Tiefe: 18 cm.Signiert „VIGER A PARIS“.Mitte 18. Jahrhundert. A.R. (†)Provenienz: Bedeutende amerikanische Privatsammlung.Literatur:Vgl. Hans Ottomeyer, Peter Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, München 1986, Bd. I, S. 124 mit Abb. (13220123) (11)Louis XV elephant mantle clock Height: 42 cm. Width: 30.5 cm. Depth: 18 cm.Signed “VIGER A PARIS”.Mid-18th century.Lever movement, pendulum on silk suspension, count wheel striking mechanism for half hour and hour strike on bell. Engraved signature and date on clockwork plate: “Viger AParis No 665”. The reason that pendulum clocks in this or similar designs with exotic details became popular in France is primarily due to renewed scientific interest. Positive colonial experiences created a new image of the exotic continents since the early Enlightenment and contributed demonstrating the new cosmopolitanism in the decorative furnishings of courtly interiors. The chinoiserie style and knowledge of Chinese and Japanese porcelain elephants or rhinos encouraged the creation of such objects. Elephant clocks were now popular artisanal products. Such specimens were created by leading bronze makers among the purveyors to the court of Louis XV, such as Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain (1719 Paris – 1791), in the most varied and detailed versions. In the present, rarer example, old directories and inventories speak of a “pendule à l’échassier”. A similar example, such as a work by Baillon was held in the collection of Anna Thomson Dodge, Rose Terrace, Grosse Point Farms Michigan (Christie’s London, June 1971), a few other examples were also only sold at renowned auctions. The structure follows a proven model: the elephant, in burnished bronze, stands to the left with its trunk raised standing on a gilt rocky base decorated with exotic leaves and flowers. A gilt saddle strap runs vertically across its body, the cylindrical case on the florally designed saddle, surrounded by foliage and flowers is surmounted by a group of animals: next to a barking hunting dog, a crane rises, holding up a rock in its talon. This iconographic motif symbolizes vigilance – if the animal starts falling asleep holding the rock will wake it up again. This figural motif, together with the barking dog, is meaningfully connected to the clock and the chiming of the bell. The white enamel dial with black Roman and Arabic minutes with a domed glass cover is signed “VIGER” – “A PARIS”. The gilt hands are in delicate openwork. In very good condition and operational. (†)Provenance: Important American private collection. Literature:cf. Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich 1986, vol. I, p. 124 with ill.

Jan Brueghel d. J., 1601 Antwerpen – 1678 ebendaKANALLANDSCHAFT MIT FUHRWERKEN UND AM UFER GELEGENEN HÄUSERNÖl auf Eichenholz.24 x 36,5 cm.Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 26. August 2022. A.R. Tranche de bois de palmier pétrifié Petrified Palm Wood SlabPalmoxylon sp.OligoceneBarisan Mountains, Sumatra, IndonesiaThis attractive slice of petrified palm wood was cut from a 30-million-year-old palm tree in the petrified forests of the Barisan Mountains on the island of Sumatra. The striking dark blue coloring at the center is streaked with gorgeous light blue patches of agate. It is bordered by a pale tan rim within a sandy corolla and bounded by a roughly textured natural bark crust. This sliced section perfectly displays the unusual inner anatomy of the original tree, with its coarse-grained structure of sclerenchyma bundles, groups of tubules that give the tall slender palm trunk its vertical strength. Brought to a highly polished finish on one side. Measuring 40 x 31 x 3 cm. Measuring 44 x 31 x 8 cm overall with stand (2) Footnotes:Offered with a custom-fitted black metal stand. Coupe transversale de dent de mammouth Extinct Mammoth Tooth Cross-section SlabMammuthus columbiPleistoceneSouth Carolina, USAThe Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) is an extinct species of mammoth that inhabited the Americas stretching from the Northern United States and as far south as Costa Rica. It was one of the last in a line of mammoth species, beginning with Mammuthus subplanifrons in the early Pliocene. DNA studies show that the Columbian mammoth was a hybrid species between woolly mammoths and another lineage descended from steppe mammoths; the hybridization happened more than 420,000 years ago. The pygmy mammoths of the Channel Islands of California evolved from Columbian mammoths. The closest extant relative of the Columbian and other mammoths is the Asian elephant.Reaching 4 m at the shoulders and 10 tonnes in weight, the Columbian mammoth was one of the largest species of mammoth. It had long, curved tusks and four molars, which were replaced six times during the lifetime of an individual. It most likely used its tusks and trunk like modern elephants—for manipulating objects, fighting, and foraging. Bones, hair, dung, and stomach contents have been discovered, but no preserved carcasses are known. The Columbian mammoth preferred open areas, such as parkland landscapes, and fed on sedges, grasses, and other plants. It did not live in the Arctic regions of Canada, which were instead inhabited by woolly mammoths. The ranges of the two species may have overlapped, and genetic evidence suggests that they interbred. Several sites contain the skeletons of multiple Columbian mammoths, either because they died in incidents such as a drought, or because these locations were natural traps in which individuals accumulated over time. For a few thousand years prior to their extinction, Columbian mammoths coexisted in North America with Paleoamericans – the first humans to inhabit the Americas – who hunted them for food, used their bones for making tools, and depicted them in ancient art. Columbian mammoth remains have been found in association with Clovis culture artifacts; these remains may have stemmed either from hunting or scavenging. The Columbian mammoth disappeared at the end of the Pleistocene around 11,500 years ago, most likely as a result of habitat loss caused by climate change, hunting by humans, or a combination of both. The present specimen is a thick cross-section slab cut from a tooth which exhibits a rich blue, grey and brown coloration due to mineralization. Polished on both sides, the original texture was left remaining on all sides.
