Stephen Simpsom, Prescot, (fl. late 18th century) A GOOD GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY-CASED 8-DAY LONG-CASE CLOCK having a swan-neck pediment with brass ball-and-spire finial, on a boxwood strung frieze and matching square door between fluted Corinthian columns, the trunk having a boxwood-strung frieze on a yoke-topped crossbanded and boxwood-strung door between fluted quadrants, on a canted base with inlaid re-entrant square panel, on ogee bracket feet, the white-painted square dial having Arabic numerals framing an axehead-form rolling moon window painted with a lady holding a bowl of fruit in a landscape, and interestingly painted with Southern hemisphere stellar constellations beneath two views of the Southern hemisphere (illustrating the Pacific Sea, Southern Ocean, New Holland etc. - suggesting, given the proximity of Prescot to the important 18th-century port of Liverpool, that this clock may have been made for a sailor of the South Seas, such as a whaling ship captain?) above crescent-form calendar aperture, inscribed maker's name "Step'n Simpson Prescot", the spandrels painted with bat's wing quadrants and flowers, 224cm, (88.2in) high (sold with two weights, pendulum, key and winder)
