Los 397

A 19th century japanese, carved ivory netsuke of a baku, 4.5cm wide with a carved ivory netsuke modelled as a monkey seated resting beside a trunk, 5cm wide (2) (at fault) An early 17th century Japanese manuscript, the Sankai Ibutsu, describes the baku as a shy, Chinese mythical chimera with an elephant's trunk, rhinoceros' eyes, an ox's tail, and a tiger's paws, which protected against pestilence and evil, and was said to 'eat nightmares' or protect against nightmares. CONDITION REPORT: Trevanion & Dean does not ship items containing ivory or tortoiseshell outside the EU. The government have proposed legislation to create a UK law to ban the sale of all ivory which sources suggest will come into effect in June 2019. Please note this means that this lot is legal to sell now but may not be in the future. Baku- Stained hairline running through the piece. Chip to tip of tail and top of head. Split running through head. Other- Multiple stained hairlines. No obvious chips or losses.
