SAM COLLIER, ECCLES, GEORGE III INLAID FIGURED MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK WITH ROLLING MOON PHASE, the 14” painted dial with subsidiary seconds and date dials, enclosed by figural spandrels, allegorical of the seasons, and set beneath the arch, inscribed: I LABOUR HERE WITH ALL MY MIGHT TO TELL THE HOUR BOTH DAY AND NIGHT, THEREFORE EXAMPLE TAKE BY ME AND SERVE THY GOD AS I SERVE THEE’, signed: SAM COLLIER, ECCLES and also faintly signed GEO KENT, powered by an eight day movement striking on a bell, and housed in a case with dentil moulding and spike and ball brass finials to the swan neck pediment, above a green and gilt painted frieze, inscribed: J. BIRCH, ECCLES, over free standing fluted columns to the fore corners, long trunk door with shaped top, flanked by cluster columns to the fore corners, and raised on a conforming, panelled base with chamfered fore corners and ogee bracket feet, the front with oval paterae and shell inlays, 94 ½” (240cm) high, lacks central finial
Charles Frodsham, London, a quarter-chiming longcase clock: the substantial eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a gong and the quarters on a further four gongs with brass-bound weights and a mercury-filled jar to the pendulum bob, the twelve-inch break-arch brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals and black Arabic five-minute markings with engraved decoration between and signed Chas. Frodsham, London, 2368, the gilded-brass dial plate profusely engraved with floral and c-scroll decoration, with a subsidiary seconds dial and decorative blued-steel fleur-de-lys hands, the arch having a subsidiary strike/silent dial, the mahogany case having a glazed trunk door, fluted quarter-columns to the hood and trunk, an inset panel to the base, a swan-neck pediment to the hood and all standing on bracket feet, height 232cms.* Biography Charles Frodsham was born into the famous Frodsham family of clockmakers on the 15th of April 1810 and apprenticed to his father William Frodsham, a founder of the chronometer making firm Parkinson & Frodsham. Charles entered eleven chronometers in the Premium trials at Greenwich until the cessation of these trials in 1836, receiving a 2nd prize in 1830. After marrying he set up on his own account at 7, Finsbury Pavement and in 1843 acquired the chronometer making business of the eminent Arnold family moving to 84, The Strand and trading as Arnold & Frodsham until 1858. On the death of Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy in 1854 Frodsham purchased the goodwill of the Vulliamy business, and on the recommendation of Airy succeeded Vulliamy as Superintendent and Keeper of Her Majesty's Clocks at Buckingham Palace. Charles Frodsham was a highly regarded author of papers and books on horology and in 1871 published The History of the Marine Chronometer, the first English language book on this subject. Frodsham died of liver disease in 1871 being succeeded by his son Harrison Frodsham and from 1884 the firm traded as Charles Frodsham & Co., becoming incorporated in 1893 and moving to 115 New Bond Street in 1895.
An Art Nouveau oak chiming longcase clock: the eight-day duration, weight-driven movement having brass bound weights, hour striking on one gong, the round silvered dial having black Arabic hour numerals and signed with the name of the retailer J. Cramp, Horsham, the oak case having a curved top, a glazed trunk door with applied metal trim, with the base having typical carved decoration to the front and sides, height 193cms.
John Bickard, Exeter, a mahogany longcase clock: the thirty-hour duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the eleven-inch square painted dial having black Roman hour numerals and decorative corner spandrels with the centre having a date aperture, a painted bird, decorative blued-steel hands and signed for the maker John Bickard, Exeter, the flat-top mahogany case having with three-quarter columns with gilt-wood capitals to the hood, a long trunk door and plain base, height 200cms.

Gardner, Greenock, a Scottish longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the thirteen-inch round painted dial having black Roman hour numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials and signed Jas. Gardner, Greenock, with blued steel moon hands, the shaped mahogany case having applied carved mouldings to the hood and base of the trunk, with a glazed trunk door, the shaped base with canted corners and a flared plinth, height 205cms.* Biography James Gardner is recorded as working at 14, Hamilton Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire as a watch and clockmaker, jeweller and chronometer maker from at least 1853 and was known to be at number 8 by 1868. * Note Reference Donald Whyte, Clock & Watchmakers of Scotland, pub. An 18th Century laburnum oyster veneer and rosewood diagonally crossbanded domed trunk on a Georgian mahogany stand:, the trunk with a hinged geometrically veneered flowerhead top enclosing a plush lined interior, having brass carrying handles to the sides, the stand on square chamfered legs, the trunk 64cm (2ft 1 1/4in) wide x 41cm (1ft 4in) deep, the stand 68cm (2ft 3in) wide.

A 19th century japanese, carved ivory netsuke of a baku, 4.5cm wide with a carved ivory netsuke modelled as a monkey seated resting beside a trunk, 5cm wide (2) (at fault) An early 17th century Japanese manuscript, the Sankai Ibutsu, describes the baku as a shy, Chinese mythical chimera with an elephant's trunk, rhinoceros' eyes, an ox's tail, and a tiger's paws, which protected against pestilence and evil, and was said to 'eat nightmares' or protect against nightmares. CONDITION REPORT: Trevanion & Dean does not ship items containing ivory or tortoiseshell outside the EU. The government have proposed legislation to create a UK law to ban the sale of all ivory which sources suggest will come into effect in June 2019. Please note this means that this lot is legal to sell now but may not be in the future. Baku- Stained hairline running through the piece. Chip to tip of tail and top of head. Split running through head. Other- Multiple stained hairlines. No obvious chips or losses.
A pair of Chinese bronze elephant incense burners, 19th century, each modelled as an elephant with raised trunk and supporting a detachable two tiered pagoda with dragon terminals, each elephant dressed for procession with one featuring descending tassels, each lacking tails, 46.5cm high CONDITION REPORT: Each elephant lacking tail and bear circular cast marks to undersides. Surface wear and general abrasions visible to each. Construction appears crude. Each pagoda lacking tassels. Casting imperfections visible to each especially to legs and undersides. Tassels to one elephants rug all present but rather fragile. One pagoda missing a lug which secures it to the elephant. Please see additional images for clarification.
