dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, Made of iron, nade-kaku-gata, yo sukashi, ko-maru-mimi, smooth surface except for the pine crowns which are made with ke-bori engraving. The severe design depicts the trunk of an old pine tree with three branches, the typical sangai matsu and the travel basket of a yamabushi resting on the ground. Kogai and Kozuk-hitsu-ana. Late Edo period late 18th century. Kept in Kiri-box. Yamabushi (yarna - mountain and bushi - rest, lie) are ascetics who live by wandering the mountains in meditation and doing charitable activities. They are proper samurai tsubas since there is a little of the Yamabushi in each of them. It is the Myokin school of Tosa province, specialized in armours and producing tsubas since the 16th century. The hammered notches on the sides of the two hitsu-ana are the distinguishing features of each artist.Provenance: Compton Collection, Christie's sale, second part 1992, lot 45. dimensions 7.1 x 7.6 x 0.5 cm.
dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, Made of iron, maru-gata, yo-sukashi, with square mimi covered with a shakudo fukurin, ke bori, in-the-round engraving with gold, shakudo, silver and shibuichi hira zogan. The rope supporting the maku is made of silver and copper, shakudo mon. The hitsu-ana are closed with shakudo ategane. The scene depicts a military camp, the command tent is tied to the trunk of an old pine tree, which decorates the entire upper part, featuring a rope represented by the silver thread crossing the tsuba and reaching to the tent moved by the wind with the mon of the commander's clan at the center. In Kiri-box. The maku represents power and reminds of the Bakufu of Kamakura. The Shoami school is one of the oldest ones, in the 17th century became a branch of the Umetada school. The tsuba is definitely a gift: it is too delicate to be mounted, therefore it is not signed and can be dated late 18th century - early 19th century. The tsuba is illustrated in 'Tosogu - Treasure of the Samurai', page 20/21.Provenance: Einar Wickander Collection. dimensions 8.4 x 8.4 x 0.5 cm.
dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, In suaka nade-kaku-gata, with beautiful, silver hira-zogan depiction and shishiai-bori (and ke-bori). The omote featuring a deep kebori engraving worked as the roughness of the trunk, and a lighter and more delicate engraving for the branches. The flowers and buds are made of hira-zogan, a coloured inlay remaining at the surface level, made of finished silver. The 'hato' pigeon is made of shakudo with the same technique and featuring a gold eye. On the ura a shakudo 'karasu' crow is depicted, with the same technique, on the branches of an old dying tree around which the tendrils of a climbing plant are twining. Since 1500, the Goto school has been one of the most important school in Japan with its many different branches and artists. The manufacturer of this beautiful tsuba belongs to that branch referring to the naturalistic painting of Funada Ikkin. We are in the mid 19th century. The meaning of the tsuba, given the deep contrast between the two sides, might be the representation of spring and summer, or the contrast between a good future, represented by the sweet pigeon, and a bad past, represented by the crow.Provenance: Behrens CollectionChristie's sale 16/06/1999. dimensions 6.4 x 6.8 x 0.5 cm.
dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, Made of shibuichi, of trapezoidal shape with rounded corners (aori-gata), smooth, polished surface with slightly raised border, silver sekigane, trace of an old hilt. The omotè, on the right, and the centre of the upper border engraved with the trunk and branch of an old blackthorn, whose roughness is highlighted with a thin 'ke-bori' with small remains of silver iroè, two small gold spots resembling climbing insects. The blackthorn is blossoming, the flowers are engraved in relief on the surface, 'hira zogan' with silver, copper and gold iroè, the buds are made of copper and silver. The left side of the plum tree engraved in ke-bori with a young bamboo plant with twigs and leaves, the larger ones are made of hira-zogan and dark, patinated shakudo, smaller twigs and leaves of a light kata-kiri- bori, the smooth trunk of the bamboo stands out. The bottom left side featuring a plant of chrysanthemums whose flowers are made of shakudo and of silver. The lower left ura with an orchid plant delicately engraved with hira-zogan, shakudo and gold, the leaves are engraved with light kata-kiri-bori. To appreciate the perfectly preserved dark patina and the minute size of the details a magnifying glass and a good light are required. Goto Ichjijo is a member of one of the branches of the ancient Goto family, but he soon abandoned the ancient styles for his own new technique featuring smooth surfaces and naturalistic subjects, this tsuba is a classic example of his work; many of his pupils were to become the best artists of the time, and one of them is the manufacturer of our item. The four depicted plants - chrysanthemum, orchid, bamboo and blackthorn - are among the artists' favourite (Lowemberger); they are a depiction of beauty, almost an ode to nature. The period is definitely mid 19th century. Provenance: Joseph U. Collection. Deo, NY and later Compton Collection, Christie's NY sale, 22/10/1992. dimensions 5.7 x 6.4 x 0.35 cm.
