Los 362

A hand-knotted Persian Hamadan rug, two darker hexagonal 'guls' against a red ground (164cm x 108cm)This trunk has come privately and has been in the same family ownership for many years travelling around with them to various countries.  The trunk is in good overall honest original condition and there has been significant interest and therefore we are looking at a revised estimate of £2,500 - £4,000.  Since the details were originally posted Lot 392 on the website many images have now been added.  Generally in good honest original condition commensurate with age.  The two thick side leather carrying handles appear in original order although the central leather strap going through the buckle has had a repair, 8/9cm pointed section from the bottom has broken at hole No. 4 and has been re-stitched.  There are several marks to the top and some ancient glue to the left hand side of the leather strap where it appears that at some stage there was a steamer trunk label.  There is some small minor indentations to the top right and the bottom right section.  The chest overall has been used for the purposes it has been designed for and as such it has sustained some scratches, minor knocks and scuffs etc., commensurate with usage and age.  The front brass catch does not quite locate as it once used to and in our opinion this is because the middle of the trunk top has risen slightly but the actual buckle shaped lock locator is only just above the hole that it should fit into in the horizontal rectangular brass escutcheon plate with the keyhole below so it should not be a difficult exercise to sort out.  The wooden batons are marked and scratched commensurate with age.  The brass mounts have darkened considerably as expected.  Some scuffing etc., to the leather parts upon the trunk and the interior would have had a removable tray that is now no longer there.  The trunk is now lined with old newspaper dated 1973 and the back section where the hinges are to the lid has a covering which is cracked full length horizontally in the middle of the hinges from one end to the other though usage and also has scuffs to the right hand side of the second left hinge in.  There are some further scuffs and marks etc., to both the ends and it looks like at some stage staples have been used to tack on labels and the residue of approx. 6 staples are still there.  The underside looks good and original  and the roller castors to the underside look original and as they have never been taken off, replaced or tampered with.  Overall the piece is sold as having been used for purpose for approx. 100 years and we think could possibly date to the mid 1920’s.

Los 392

A large early 20th century wooden and leather-bound travelling trunk by Louis Vuitton; the top back and front riveted with natural wooden batons with the corners mounted in brass with the typical Louis Vuitton motifs and the rivets also stamped Louis Vuitton, with two large hand-stitched leather handles and leather strap to the front, (also signed), both ends initialled 'M.C.' in white and the hinged lid opening to reveal lined interior and padding to the inside of the lid within a signed latticework design, the brass flip-catch signed '70. Champs Elysees, Paris, Louis VUITTON, London 149 New Bond Street, the inside of the trunk with numbered orange label to the lid 790528 and the rectangular brass escutcheon plate numbered 078394, (101.5cm wide x 55cm deep x 59cm high) the trunk with four affixed iron wheels to the underside This trunk has come privately and has been in the same family ownership for many years travelling around with them to various countries.
