Great Western Railway 12 inch dial mahogany cased drop dial trunk fusee clock supplied to the GWR around 1870 by Kays Ltd of Worcester. The rectangular plated chain driven fusee movement has shaped shoulders with cut out to the bottom of the plates and turned pillars. The mahogany case with GWR ivorine clock numberplate 2063 screwed to the front has an eight piece segmented surround, back box with two side doors and a bottom door with cock beading secured by the std GWR replacement ball bearing catch with both hinges stamped GWR. The clock has a spun brass bezel with plastered in sight ring. The original dial is lettered G.W.R. and clearly visible as ghosted writing is KAYS LIMITED WORCESTER. In working condition complete with pendulum and key. A nice early example of these popular clocks.

Stan Dodds (1928-2012): A Carved Oak Group, of a Mahout riding an Indian elephant, the elephant is using the trunk to push a log, 22cm long 20.5cm high See illustration Stan Dodds worked for Robert Thompson's from 1942 until his retirement in 1994. This carving was wrapped in 1969 newspaper and is sketched on the back of a 1961 calendar page.

He was one of the finest clockmakers in the North West, his work being of a very high standard, even in his thirty hour clocks. This example, number 561, is recorded and listed in Cave-Brown-Cave (BW) Jonas Barber Clockmaker of Winster , pg.230, where he lists the lives and work of the Barber family. A mid 20th century canvas and wooden bound steamer trunk chest belonging to William Gerard Leigh of the 1st Life Guards. Together with a grey metal military campaign trunk still bearing a military label marked for W Gerard Leigh. The canvas bound trunk with label for his daughter Emily Gerard Leigh ( calne school ) ( J Gerard Leighs larger military campaign trunk in lot 1419 ) William Gerard Leigh whose significant career as also a Life Guard soldier and interestingly married Jean Gerard Leigh ( the latter trunk her daughters for Calne School), famous for being the the woman whose photograph was used to help trick the Germans into falling for one of the greatest deceptions of the Second World War in Operation Mincemeat. Operation Mincemeat, which was to inspire a film called The Man Who Never Was in the 1950s, was devised in the spring of 1943 by two intelligence officers, Charles Cholmondeley of MI5 and Commander Ewen Montagu of Naval Intelligence. With Churchill planning to invade Italy through Sicily, a ruse was required to make the Germans believe that the attack would take place elsewhere.
