1st millennium BC. A repoussé gold foil mount in the form of an advancing winged bull with curved horns, gaping mouth, elliptical ear, thick trunk, broad wing and curled tail; to the reverse, a gold attachment loop. 1.33 grams, 44mm (1 3/4"). Property of an American collector; previously in the Pullen collection, Northern Ireland, UK; acquired in the 1960s. Very fine condition.

A George III mahogany cased longcase clock, by Valentine Downs, Louth, circa 1780, the eight-day movement striking on a bell, twelve-inch brass break-arch dial with silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, five minute Arabic numerals and minute track, the matted dial centre with engraved decoration, inset subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, cast brass floral spandrels to the four corners and engraved steel hands, the arch having a silvered boss engraved 'Vale. Downs, Louth' and further c-floral spandrels, the hood with broken swan neck pediment centred by a brass orb finial, dentil moulding, reeded columns with brass capitals flaking the glazed door, the trunk with applied quarter columns with brass capitals flanking a full length trunk door with pointed arch and inset escutcheon, raised on shaped bracket feet, with winder, pendulum and two weights, 46.5 by 27 by 243cm high.

Formed as a fragment of gnarled bamboo trunk, carved to the reverse with further bamboo shoots and prunus blossom and to the interior with a craned perched on the branches of a pine tree, 25.5cm.Condition report intended as a guide only.Some natural hair cracks caused by the drying of the material.

Impressed marks, 66cm high.Condition report intended as a guide only.Crazed all over. One rim lobe re attached and over painted. One hairline crack on the rim. Some abrasion to the glaze around the rim. Slight chipping to the bears ears. Large flat chip to the side of the base near the bears left foot. Long flat chip to the bears right foot.
