MUSSON OF LOUTH; an early 19th century inlaid mahogany eight day longcase clock, the painted dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture below an arch decorated with the castle and rocking automaton, with movement striking on a bell, the hood with swan neck pediment and spiral fluted supports, with trunk on bracket feet, height 114cm.

(Spines loosening, top of spines dam., rubbed on the edges, marg. waterst. & browned, waterstain to upper half front. and ti-p.). NOTE:Previously owned by Bolle Willum Luxdorph (1716-1788), who had had the books luxuriously bound and marked with his seal: an elephant with crowned trunk. Luxdorph was a productive writer and politician, but is most well-known for his vast collection of books. He held some 15000 titles, of which 900 offer insight into a unique period in history: the Danish declaration of Free Press in 1770. - Schweiger II, 844 & 849; Dibdin II, 368.
Scottish mahogany longcase clock, scrolled pediment with turned finial, the door flanked by quarter columns, bracket feet, repainted circular dial diameter thirteen inches subsidiary seconds and date dial, signed Robertson, Blairgowie, eight-day movement striking on a bell, 215cm.Condition report:The case is generally good, some evidence of restoration to the finial, etc., sides of base split, repainted dial, has pendulum, two weights and a trunk door key, was working the clients home.

A BRASS-BOUND TEAK RECTANGULAR TRUNK; AND THREE CARVED GILT-LACQUERED PANELSCirca 1900 and 20th centuryThe trunk with hinged cover, side carrying handles and twin locks, the mounts engraved with dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls, set on shaped feet; together with three gilt wood architectural panels elaborately carved with figural panels and birds amongst flowering branches. He married Julia Burke in 1949 and they moved to London. James started working for Iron and Steel Exporters and later that year, he was offered the chance to set up an office Hong Kong, so they moved there and set up home. The business was successful, they loved Hong Kong and they lived the life of ex-patriates to the full. They swam, played golf, made friends and indulged their passion for fast cars, competing in amateur road races. Julia claimed to have won at the first Macau Grand Prix. As well as enjoying the pastimes of the culture they brought with them, they developed an enduring love for China, Chinese people, Chinese food and Chinese art. With a growing family, they returned to England in 1957.
