A 19TH CENTURY LOUIS VUITTON TRUNK BY REPUTE BELONGING TO FAMED SWEDISH PHYSICIAN AND PSYCHIATRIST AXEL MUNTHE (1857-1949) AND AUTHOR OF 'THE STORY OF SAN MICHELE', Provenance: From the Munthe family home Southside House, Wimbledon Village. 110cm x 55cm x 55cm Black trunk with two large red painted 'M' for Munthe. Each clasp stamped with Louis Vuitton. With three pull out trays, two of which are sectional. Axel Munthe was born in Oskarshamn in 1857 and died in the Royal Palace of Stockholm in 1949. He had by then lived outside Sweden for 67 years and had had such a singular a career that he could have made his own the last words uttered by Charles XIV John: ”No one has followed a path like mine.” Munthe was a man of paradoxes. Having qualified as a doctor of medicine at the Sorbonne aged 22 (the youngest on record in France), he soon became one of the most successful doctors of his time, with a reputation as a worker of miracles. Among his patients were members of the upper classes and aristocracy of both Europe and America, but he also worked amongst the poor in Paris, Rome and Naples. The newspaper report he wrote about his work in cholera-stricken Naples in the autumn of 1884 made him famous at a stroke. However, he was not a professional writer, and his real success only followed 45 years later. The Story of San Michele was published in 1929 and became one of the most successful books of the 20th century. It was written in English, has been translated into a large number of other languages and new editions are still being printed. Munthe was not an architect, but on Capri he caused to be built one of the most famous villas of Europe: Villa San Michele, which has been described by experts as a work of architectural genius. He was a fervent anglophile, but his favorite philosopher was Schopenhauer, his favorite poet Heine, his favorite composers were Schubert, Wagner, Schumann and Hugo Wolf. And despite his republican outlook on life, his most important patient was not only royal and German born, but also strongly German-orientated. Munthe’s relationship with Crown Princess Victoria, from 1907 Queen of Sweden, plays a central part in his biography. He was not only her personal physician, but also her closest friend and confidant. Munthe’s importance to both her physical and moral well-being cannot be sufficiently underlined. His contribution to Victoria’s health was due to psychological insights which, however, were not present in his personal relationships. He was married twice, first to Ultima Hornberg, then to Hilda Pennington Mellor who bore him two sons. The first marriage ended in divorce, the second with marital separation. The continuing great interest in Munthe is explained by the abundance of his talents and the contradictory nature of his character. ”The man from Ultima Thule is an incurable idealist, a vague dreamer, a mute poet whose heart holds an unwritten paean to the Sun”. Thus wrote Axel Munthe in the preface to the Italian edition of The Story of San Michele and he continued with a paradox: ”The Southerner is a realist, the blood that courses in his veins is hotter, but his head is cooler than that of people of the North. He is passionate, even violent in love and hatred, but he is no enthusiast.” But that was Axel Munthe. - Bengt Jangfeldt, biographer of Axel Munthe.

An important early 18th Century Irish mahogany cased Grandfather Clock, of narrow proportions, the hood with broken arched pediment and carved rosettes, and half reeded Corinthian columns housing an arched brass dial decorated with mounts and signed "Jon. Parker, Dublin," the arch with painted medallion of Winged Saint Figure, the trunk with panelled door on box base with bracket feet, approx. 229ms high x 41cms wide (90" x 16"). (1)
Harry Kernoff (1900-1974) "Bandstand, The Hollow, Phoenix Park, 1926" O.O.B., approx. 30cms x 40cms (12" x 15 1/2"), signed t.l. ‘Kernoff’. (1) Inscribed on verso: ‘The Hollow, Phoenix Park, Irish Free State Band, 1926; name H. A. Kernoff 13 Stamer St’ Bears Beverly Smith label on verso ‘Mr. Teevan, 3 Eglinton Rd.’ In this cheerful summer scene, set in ‘The Hollow’ in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, Harry Kernoff depicts an octagonal bandstand with a red roof, surrounded by an audience of onlookers who stand amidst the trees, listening to the music. In the left foreground, two women lean against a tree. Visible on the tree trunk is the shadow of a man; an enigmatic touch to this everyday scene. An inscription on the reverse of this painting states that the band playing was the ‘Irish Free State Band’. Perhaps the foremost visual chronicler of everyday life in Ireland in the twentieth century, like his English counterpart L. S. Lowry, Kernoff recorded the men, women and children of Dublin as they went about their daily routines, walking in parks, or by the canal, or heading out to the beach. However, unlike Lowry, Kernoff preferred to depict sunny days, with red-brick terraces, brightly coloured shopfronts and well-dressed people out and about, enjoying the sunshine. Paintings such as The Bandstand also reveal Kernoff’s sympathies with the working people of Dublin. He was a politically active artist, having joined the Radical Club and “Friends of Soviet Russia”. In 1930 he toured the USSR, and that same year several of his paintings were reproduced in the magazine Iskusstvo y massy, or “Art to the Masses”. In travelling to the Soviet Union, Kernoff was going back to his own family roots. Born into a Jewish family that fled pogroms in Belarus, Harry Kernoff’s father, Isaac Kernoff, set up as a cabinet maker in London. When Harry was fourteen years old, the family moved from Stepney to Dublin, where Isaac joined the cabinet-making firm of Louis Gurevich, on Capel Street. Settling in Stamer Street, while serving an apprenticeship with his father, Kernoff also attended evening classes at the Metropolitan School of Art, along with his brother Hyman. Over the years he showed frequently at the Dublin Painters gallery on Stephens Green, and also participated in group exhibitions, both in Ireland and abroad. From 1926 onwards, for almost five decades, he exhibited annually at the RHA, and he also had two solo shows with the Victor Waddington Galleries. Provenance: Collection of Thomas Teevan, Dublin. A distinguished lawyer and judge, Thomas Teevan served as Attorney General of Ireland in 1953-54. Peter Murray 2024

Victorian Camphorwood Campaign Trunk Belonging to a WT Askew. A Victorian military campaign trunk, made in camphorwood, with original brass fittings and handles. The brass plaque on the top is inscribed 'WT Askew'.H: 33.5cm W: 75cm D: 37.5cm. This Victorian Camphorwood chest was made circa 1870 when there was much upheaval and troubles in India, the untamed areas of Afghanistan, and the Northwest Frontier.British Officers would need strong durable chests to transport their uniforms and effects on the long arduous and dangerous journeys, hence why these trunks had brass corners to protect these, they also had the advantage of looking attractive. Camphorwood has a natural perfume and so when the trunk is opened you get a gentle aroma of the beautiful camphor scent. This timber was especially important in the East as insects avoid this timber and so the uniforms etc were free from attack. These Victorian Camphorwood military chests make fantastic coffee tables as not only are they functional they also make great conversation pieces. Of course, they can be used in many places around your home as have a capacious storage area.
