JOHN CLOWES, LONDON A 17TH CENTURY WALNUT AND MARQUETRY LONGCASE CLOCK (with later alterations), having principally period floral marquetry case with lenticel window, blind fret carved and barley twist column hood, eight day period mechanism with bo lt and shutter winding bell (later) locking plate strike, square, (possibly later) 10" brass dial with cast spandrels, on later bun feet, 2m high Condition Report & Amendments to Catalogue Description (25th July, 2017)The hood and trunk have been extensively restored. The weights appear large and heavyWe have not had the mechanism to pieces.Original catalogue description INCORRECT in respect of bolt and shutter winding. There are shutters (not original) activated on a pull mechanism – like a pull repeat. The mechanism and dial may well be married. Mechanism is later or partly later. Parts of the mechanism are circa 1700. There is an extra wheel in the train which we think makes the clock “month going” but a train count has not been done and therefore we cannot warrant.Overall comment – the clock has elements of 1690 but is by no means wholly original – subjected to many changes over 300 plus years !!! Viewing highly recommended. At the time of writing this report the clock is ticking !
