1903 DE DION-BOUTON 6HP TWO SEATER VOITURETTECoachwork by Gamette et Fils, LiègeEngine No. 10482THE MOTORCAR OFFEREDThe middle-aged car of the three in this remarkable discovery of automobiles is this archetypal De Dion-Bouton Voiturette. The De Dion carries a plate on the front of its dashboard proclaiming that its coachwork is by Gamette et Fils of Liège, which from our research is a quite typical former horsedrawn carriage maker that had evolved into building bodies for motorcars. Albert Gamette was one of a handful of coachbuilders who had exhibited their profession at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris and by the time that this car was bodied the transition to car coachwork was likely in full swing. While following a format that one would associate with De Dion voiturettes of this period, it is nevertheless distinctive from stock French factory coachwork in that it has a raised metal bar to each side as the arm rests. As with the other cars in this cache, the De Dion is understood to have been bought new by the family, and the fact that it also has local coachwork fits this script, as does the color choice of its fabric upholstery which matches that of the Renault. It would appear that at some point later on its life that this car only received a cheaper freshening with a quick repaint in the uniform vermilion red used the chassis and running gear of the others. Of the three, this car shows by far more age than the others, the wings have clearly been damaged and repaired and there is substantial rot to the passenger side of the body all of which suggests that at least at some point in its career the De Dion may have been left outside or subjected to the elements for an extended period. The trunk on the back of the car is likely a later addition. Liaison with marque expert and noted author of numerous publications on the marque, Michael Edwards in the UK, has established that it conforms to De Dion's Type N model, which featured a 6hp power unit married to a two speed transmission and invariably was equipped with the wire wheels of the early vis-à-vis cars which just preceded. In effect it was a transitional model, before a reverse gear and wooden wheels were introduced, and while those may be more practical for use the overall effect of the 'N' is a nice balance of lightweight design and adequate power to its weight. From the sequence of its engine number of 10482 it would likely have been built early in 1903. All told, this is nonetheless an exciting discovery and another potential Veteran car to grace the hobby and provide use on events such as those of the Teuf-Teuf club or, of course, the London to Brighton Run, once accepted by the official process.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
