Whitehurst, Derby - a George III oak 30 hour long case clock, the 11" brass dial signed, the movement stiking on a bell, to a plain hood and trunk, height 200 cm, pendulum, weight. John Whitehurst II (1761-1834) was apprenticed in Congleton to his father James and succeeded to the firm started in Derby by his famous uncle, John Whirtehurst FRS (1713-1788). His son John (1788-1855) was apprenticed to him 1802-1809 after which he joined his father in business, their products thereafter being signed Whitehurst & Son/Derby and numbered from a year or so later, suggesting this instrument was made prior to 1809.

19th Century mahogany longcase clock by William Maggs of Axbridge, the arch shaped dial with glazed door within a typically West Country wavy frame, flanked by fluted pillars, the trunk with short door and standing on plinth base, arch shaped painted dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture, 30 hour movement Condition:
Rare Indian Mughal All-Iron Dagger Khanjar c.1620, curved double edge blade with raised central rib, integral hilt comprising swollen octagonal grip, roof-shaped pommel with stylised animal head finials one retaining a small iron loop for a tassel, knuckle bow with horse head finial emanates from an elephant’s trunk, whorled pommel button, traces of gold damascened decoration overall. Good condition for age, rusted overall and requires careful cleaning. Overall 34.5cms.

An early 19thC flamed mahogany longcase clock, with swan neck pediment, having brass roundel and eagle and ball spike to the tapered pillared hood, the trunk having an arch and crossbanded door enclosed by quarter inset candy twist columns, over an oval tablet and plain base, having cupid's bow apron and bracket feet, the 30cm square arch dial having roses and summer flowers to the arch, roses and thistles to the spandrels, Roman hour numerals, subsidiary seconds and date rings, an inscribed John Courage Insch, 8-day movement striking a bell, 210cm H.
An early 19thC oak and mahogany crossbanded longcase clock, with swan neck pillared hood with ball and spike finales, shaped trunk door with oval shelved tierer, crossbanded base, shaped apron with bracket feet, the painted 30cm dial having roses to the spandrels, Arabic hour numerals, subsidiary seconds ring and inscribed J WILSON, Stamford, 8-day movement striking a bell, 213cm H. One of three clockmaking brothers recorded as working in the late 18th century, the others being Ralph and Robert. They also had businesses in Bourne, Peterborough and Spalding (Wh. 1842). They are recorded in the LR&SM as working in 1795.

An early 19thC oak longcase clock, with swan neck and pillared hood, shaped trunk door with reeded moulding, plain base with moulded plinth, in the Northamptonshire manner, the 30cm painted dial having swans in an ornamental garden to the arch, floral spandrels, Roman hour numerals, seconds ring and date crescent, indistinct makers marking by possibly J Simpson of Lincoln, 202cm H.

An early 19thC mahogany longcase clock, with moulded swan neck and turned pillared hood, with mahogany crossbanded canted trunk, with shaped door, over a crossbanded base with bracket feet, the 30cm square dial painted with pheasants to the spandrels, striking a bell, having Roman hour numerals and marked Josh Wilson Stamford, 30 hour movement, 213cm H. White's Directory of Lincolnshire 1842 record a Joseph Wilson working All Saints Street, Stamford. The clock will pre-date this slightly.
An early 19thC oak longcase clock, with moulded swan neck and reeded pillared hood, with ball and spike finial, the reeded and canted trunk having full length angular arched top and crossbanded door with oval shell patera, plain base, the 30cm square dial painted with roses to the spandrels, having Arabic hour and quarter numerals, date crescent and marked John Tasker, FALKINGHAM, 30 hour movement, 213cm H. Tasker, John, Falkingham: Clock and watchmaker, ca.1798 1808, 1813, 1815 (LR& SM.) LR&SM Friday May 11th 1798. "Falkingham May 3rd 1798 John Tasker, watch and clockmaker, takes the earliest opportunity of returning sincere thanks to his friends and the public in general for the very liberal encouragement he has already met with and hopes by a due attention to the confidence reposed in him to merit their future favours. He has just laid in a fresh assortment of new clocks and watches." LR&SM Friday September 23rd 1808 "John Tasker, watch and clockmaker, Falkingham, returns sincere thanks to his friends for all favours conferred on him in the course of 11 years that he has been in business at Falkingham and informs the public of Tattershall Fair on the 26th and 27th instant, with a good assortment of new watches etc. which he will warrant to give satisfaction. September 20th 1808" His approach to business must have been successful as he advertised in a similar vein on September 22nd 1809 Perhaps pressure of work, but definitely ill health prompted the following press release. LR&SM Friday September 1813 "John Tasker, watch and clockmaker, Falkingham, respectfully informs his friends and the public in general, that he has engaged an assistant to clean and repair such clocks and watches as his friends may think proper to entrust to his care. J. Tasker is sorry his ill health has prevented him from waiting on friends but assures them that their orders will meet every attention and will be considered by him as a double favour under his present circumstances." Unfortunately John's medical condition gradually deteriorated and eighteen months later he had to retire from business as this statement published on Friday 24th March 1815 testifies. "John Tasker, watch and clockmaker and engraver, on account of his long indisposition having declined business in favour of William Foster - William Foster respectfully informs the inhabitants of Falkingham and its vicinity that he has just received a fresh assortment of jewellery and other goods in the above line." William Foster is known to be working at Coningsby in 1842
