El Anatsui (Ghanaian, born 1944)'Talakawa' signed and dated 'EL/ 91' (lower right)carved and painted wood120 x 50 x 40cm (47 1/4 x 19 11/16 x 15 3/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceThe collection of the late Chief Torch Taire;Purchased from Nimbus Gallery, Lagos, in 1992;A private collection.ExhibitedThe National Gallery, Lagos, Old and New: An Exhibition of Sculpture in Assorted Wood, 1991, no. 43.This sculpture was constructed from the trunk of an Iron wood tree. This tree is indigenous to Nigeria and has long been a valuable agricultural resource. Traditionally, the trunks were used to extract palm oil. Villagers would scour the forests for trees of sufficient circumference. Once felled and hollowed, the trunk's smooth interior functioned as a mortar in which palm kernels could be ground. The hardness of the wood meant that it could withstand the pounding of the extraction process; the same trunk could be reused for multiple harvests. However, the trunk would eventually crack, weakened by the acidic oil released by the crushed palm kernels. No longer useful to the farmers, the trunk would be discarded.El Anatsui came across one such trunk whilst on a walk near his studio. He was struck by the beauty of the worn wood and its warm patina. Although it had ceased to be useful as a tool, the artist saw its aesthetic potential. He took the trunk back to his studio, where he incised and painted it. What had been a piece of detritus, was reborn as a work of fine art.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A George III longcase clock, with eight day striking movement by W Durham Dunbar, the oak case with long trunk door. Height including finial 220 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Whilst we have both weights and the pendulum, we have not had the clock running. When weight is applied to both the going and strike trains, the movement does however appear to operate. The dial is in reasonably good condition with only minor blemishes and rubbing around the numerals particularly from IV to IX. The case is in generally good order with no significant issues. The trunk door is not warped and there are no significant cracks, losses or damage. The feet are original and all present.
A fine George III longcase clock by William Lassel Toxteth Park and London, with three train movement chiming on eight bells and with moonphase, inscribed Lafsel Park London to the arch and Lafsel Park below the numeral VI, with moonphase and subsidiary seconds dial. Dial width 13", the hood ornately carved with carved capitals and columns and with long trunk door flanked by fluted quarter column corners. Height 244 cm, trunk width 40.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Whilst this is clearly a remarkable clock case and certainly in keeping with a Liverpool maker there are reasons to believe that the case and movement are a marriage. The dial and case may be right, however the engraving around the winder aperture seems slightly on the concentric aperture rings. The second hand is also blind in that it rests 1 cm beneath where it ought to. the moonphase also is not operative or connected. the pillars attaching the dial to the movement are also slightly at an angle further suggesting a marriage. The mask around the dial is also not original. the case as you can see is in extremely good condition with no significant issues. The movement is currently ticking away and striking correctly when advanced.
A George III mahogany longcase clock, Samuel Pearse Honiton, with Father Time automaton to arch and with eight day movement. Height including brass finial 242 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains and is currently ticking away. When the hands are advanced the movement strikes. The minute hand is detached and bent but present. The automaton is operating. The seatboard is old and the cheeks have not been built up. The mask around the dial fits well. The case is generally in good order. It looks to have been re-polished in fairly recent times. There are some minor repairs around the extremities. The trunk door fits well with only very minor warping. The plinth around the base is probably a later edition but the colour is a good match. There is a joint stress fracture on the front base panel. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
A George III mahogany longcase clock by W. Nicholson of Whitehaven, the case with swans neck pediment above an arched glazed door enclosing the 12" arched brass dial with penny moon and tidal dial to the arch, with eight day striking movement date aperture and subsidiary seconds dial, flanked by fluted columns with long arched trunk door, fluted and reeded quarter columns and conforming base supported on ogee bracket feet. Height 225 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock has come in for sale from a local private source and is in generally very good order. The case is in extremely good order and in our opinion does not require any work. The doors are not significantly warped. The trunk door closes correctly and locks with the key. There is a slight gap between the top shaped edge of the door and the case itself when the door is closed. The same comment applies to the bottom of the door which is clearly not visible. The movement winds on both trains and is currently ticking away and striking in the saleroom. The mask around the dial is not a perfect fit and there is a small gap around the face and the mask. As you will see from our images the cheeks have not been built up and the seatboard is clearly old.
A 19th century oak and mahogany banded longcase clock, by Couldwell Deep-Coull, with eight day striking movement and painted dial with short trunk door and conforming base raised on bracket feet. Height 222 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Whilst we do have both weights and the pendulum, we have not had the movement running. When weight is applied to both the going and strike trains the movement does however seem to operate. The dial is in generally good order with no significant blemishes. The hood has some minor veneer losses and is generally in good condition as is the case. The trunk door is not warped. The rear right-hand facing foot bracket has a small loss.
A mahogany chiming longcase clock, early 19th century, the hood with swanneck pediment and twin columns flanking the 16inch painted dial signed 'Wm Holland, Chester', with moonphase disc to arch, female seasonal figural spandrels, 8 day movement chiming on 8 bells and striking on a further bell, the trunk with conforming column corners233cm highA good looking clock with 3 weights, pendulum and keys. Ticks for a short time then stops, so probably needs a service.
An Irish mahogany longcase clock by William Stafford, Dublin, circa 1760, the hood with swanneck pediment and scallop shell frieze, the 13.75inch brass dial with silvered chapter ring and seconds dial, date aperture below, flanked by fluted columns, the trunk with arched moulded door, the plinth base with rusticated quoins, on ogee bracket feet. 238cm highThe pendulum is present but has a broken suspension spring. The right side foot is missing. We have the two weights, but have not been able to test it due to the faulty pendulum. However apart from the above, it does not look too problematic.
