The square plexiglass frame that housed Andy Warhol's "Mao" screen print, shot two times by Dennis Hopper in his home in the late 1970s.According to Alex Hitz (family friend and trustee of Hopper's estate): "One night in the shadows, Dennis, out of the corner of his eyes, saw the Mao and he was so spooked by it that he got up and shot at it twice, putting two bullet holes in it. Andy saw it [and] loved it." A screen-matched framed print of Geronimo which hung on the wall in the seating area behind the bar on the set of the classic sitcom Cheers (NBC, 1982-93). The verso of the wooden frame features a picture of a wooded cottage and the Cheers logo.The print originally hung in the dressing room of Nicholas Colasanto, who played bartender "Coach" Ernie Pantusso in the series' first three seasons. After he died in 1985, his character passed as well (he was replaced by Woody Harrelson as Woody). The print was moved to the show's set and can be seen in many scenes throughout the series beginning in its fourth season. At the end of the touching series finale, Sam Malone (Ted Danson) straightens the picture while closing the bar for the last time. On the final episode of the beloved series Ted Lasso, Mae (Annette Badland), a sports-loving pub owner and bartender who is one of Coach Ted Lasso's only early supporters, straightens a print of the same picture of Geronimo, paying homage to Cheers and Colasanto.Colasanto was a WWII veteran who planned to have a career as a bookkeeper and accountant until he was inspired by Henry Fonda's performance in Mister Roberts (Warner Bros., 1955) to pursue acting. A navy and cream dupioni silk dress with polka-dot pattern accents designed for Maureen O'Hara as Min Wead in the film The Wings of Eagles (MGM 1957) starring John Wayne. An original costume design by Walter Plunkett, who designed Maureen O'Hara's wardrobe for the film. The dress has a fitted bodice with princess seams, tailored sleeves, and a fold-over collar with a cream and navy polka-dot print; the print accents the center front of the dress, running from the neckline to the hem. There is a raw hemline probably from the hem coming untacked or it was in the process of being altered for the actress. The skirt of the dress is open and features inverted pleats. The dress has two labels, the bias tape label reads "1701 5369 Maureen O'Hara," and an orange paper MGM label with a handwritten number "26413."The film is based on pilot Frank W. "Spig" Wead who is working to improve the navy's aviation program. His life centers around aviation and piloting, causing his family to take a back seat. One night he becomes paralyzed after falling down the stairs, he turns away from his wife played by O'Hara. He recovers and goes on to write screen-plays on his life as a pilot, but re-enlists during World War II. His patriotic duty is his priority until his health in the end forces him to retire. Walter Plunkett designed all of Maureen O'Hara's costumes in the film; he also designed her costumes as Esmerelda in The Huntchback of Notre Dame.
An original costume for Audrey Hepburn as Jo Stockton in Stanly Donen’s film Funny Face, costumes credited to Edith Head (Paramount 1957). A straw wide-brim hat with tri-color hand-gathered chiffon, designed by Edith Head for Audrey Hepburn and her musical number “How Long Has This Been Going On.” Three colors of mango, cantaloupe, and melon green chiffon are hand-gathered and tacked, appearing like delectable meringues. The underside of the hat’s brim is lined with yellow chiffon, and a wire wrapped in avocado green velvet goes around the lip of the brim to keep its shape and structure. There is a faded stamp on the interior of the dome, reading, “PARAMOUNT.” There is no label or size marker, the brim measures 17 inches in diameter and the chiffon ties measure 70 inches in length (the edges are machine sewn to keep the fabric from fraying. Audrey sings and dances with the hat as she begins to acquaint herself with the world of fashion and questions her feelings that are developing for Fred Astaire’s character Dick Avery. A Cinderella story of a young woman coming into her identity, which Audrey portrays remarkably. The costumes, setting, and romance between Hepburn and Astaire make this Gershwin musical “S' Wonderful.” Hepburn’s Paris wardrobe, while credited to Edith Head was designed by haute couturier Hubert de Givenchy. Audrey’s beautiful gowns, dresses, and outfits are brought to life in this beloved classic. This lot comes with a print of an Edith Head design sketch of the hat being modeled in the film.
