Humphrey, November 20th 1804, etching with contemporary hand colouring, corners trimmed to the painted margin, 255 x 380 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:BM Satires 10300. The caricature is purported to show Miss Sarah Sophia Banks (sister of the naturalist Sir Joesph Banks) arriving at an inn (The Cock in Breeches) with her entourage. Miss Banks was an enthusiastic print collector and numismatist, whose collection was gifted to the British Museum by her brother after her death.
* Gillray (James). Hope [and] Despair, H. Humphrey, April 8th 1802, pair of etchings with bright contemporary hand colouring, old adhesion marks to the verso, each approximately 255 x 210 mm, with another copy of 'Despair'QTY: (3)NOTE:'Despair' shows Richard Bateman Robson, M.P. for Okehampton, who created a sensation by stating that the finances of the Government were desperate and that it was unable to pay its bills. Under pressure, he said that payment had been refused at the Sick and Hurt Office for a bill of £19. 17s. He was censored for his intemperance. Seated behind him are John Horne Tooke, Thomas Tyrwhitt Jones and Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Bt. 'Hope' shows William Dickinson - an engraver and print seller - with Prime Minister Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool on his feet addressing the house in the background.
* Dawe (Philip, attrib.). A Hint to the Husbands, or the Dresser properly Dressed, R. Sayer and J. Bennett, 25th Jany. 1777, mezzotint droll with bright contemporary hand-colouring, slight staining, 350 x 250 mm, together with Carington Bowles (publisher). Slight of hand by a Monkey - or a Lady's head Unloaded, 25th October 1776, mezzotint with bright contemporary hand colouring, slight toning to the margins, 350 x 255 mmQTY: (2)NOTE:The first print shows a lady sits at her dressing table, whilst attended by a handsome young hairdresser, who is arranging her elaborate coiffure. The lady turns around towards her husband who has entered the room threatening the hairdresser with a whip. A smiling maidservant stands at the door making the sign of the cuckold over the husband's head. The second image is a satire on fashion: a monkey on a wall snatches a huge wig from the head of a female macaroni, revealing her to be almost bald, to the delight of a passing butcher's boy and a man picking pears who looks over the wall.
* Starcke (C. after James Gillray). Scientific Researches! - New Discoveries in Pneumaticks! - or - an Experimental lecture on the powers of Air [1802], hand-coloured etching published in 'London und Paris', old folds, lower left corner trimmed, but not affecting the printed image, 260 x 350 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:An acidic comment on a public lecture at the Royal Institution. The audience includes recognisable politicians, diplomats and intellectual women (‘bluestockings’). They look amused or disgusted as Sir J. C. Hippisley is given nitrous oxide gas by the physician Thomas Garnett and his assistant Humphry Davy. A diary entry by Lady Elizabeth Holland relates an event very similar to what Gillray portrays. Gillray makes the most of a fart joke to reference the ‘hot air’ that contemporaries criticised in both gas research and radical politics. This print is one of several public attacks that led to nitrous oxide research being abandoned because of its proponents’ supposedly dangerous political views. Eight days after the publication of the original etching, Joseph Banks would propose Davy be promoted to Professor of Chemistry. Davy, however, failed to grasp the significance of the gas as an anaesthetic, treating it instead as a curio and conversation piece.

A pair of historically interesting mid 19th century Mexican silver spurs, with deeply embossed foliate decoration and multi spiked iron rowels, the arms of each finely engraved in flowing script "Su Exelencia Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna", the inside of the arms bearing silver marks, with silver buckles and leather straps. Good Condition. Santa Anna was a prominent though controversial politician who served five spells (some say six) as President of Mexico between 1843 and 1855, playing a notable role in the fall of the First Mexican Empire, the fall of the First Mexican Republic, the Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War among other things. He was renowned for frequently switching sides to suit his political ends, and after a series of leadership failures was overthrown and exiled in 1855. The spurs were handed down from a family member who married an American GI during the war and after suffering abuse from him was given them to help pay for her passage back to the UK in 1948. With this lot is a US Treasury Department invoice for bounty paid to John Roberts on discharge from the 1st Mass(achusetts) Vol(unteers) in 1872 (slightly creased and torn), and a print out of the Wikipedia entry on Santa Anna. £600-900
