Joseph Nash (British, 1808-1878)Queen Elizabeth I and her privy council signed and dated 'J.Nash .1862.' (lower left)gouache and watercolour heightened with gum arabic56 x 94cm (22 x 37in).Footnotes:Joseph Nash was born in Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and attended Manor House School in Croydon which his father owned. Whilst in his early twenties, he studied drawing with Augustus Pugin, and it is therefore no great surprise that throughout his artistic career he specialised in watercolour depictions of British buildings, mainly historic. His works were widely reproduced in print, his success in this field culminating in 1849 with the completion of his four volume Mansions of England in the Olden Time. As in the present lot, this publication concerned itself with history through the accurate depiction of buildings and interiors populated by historical figures. These works give a sense of how buildings and spaces would have looked and been used in the past.In the present lot we can see a young Queen Elizabeth with her Privy Council of advisors; sitting to her right is her most trusted advisor, William Cecil, Lord Burghley. Although the council was made up of nineteen men, depicted here are twenty-four, perhaps indicating the presence of some other nobles or foreign dignitaries. Hanging on the walls around the room are portraits of the Queen's ancestors, notably her father, Henry VIII, can be seen to the far left; each portrait can be seen as a symbol of Elizabeth's claim to the crown. The level of detail is impressive, with exquisitely detailed costumes, wallpaper that can be seen to peel at its edges, crested paperwork strewn on the table, a glove fallen on the ground, and an expansive landscape shown through the stained-glass windows. Although it is not clear which building this council is taking place in, given its frequency of use by the Queen, proximity to the Thames, and the buildings on the far-side, it seems likely to be the Palace of Whitehall. Having said this, the sailing ships on the Thames, which would not have been able to pass Old London Bridge, may point to it being either the Tower of London or the Palace of Placentia at Greenwich. The present work is one of Nash's masterpieces. It epitomises his interest in history, interiors, and architecture, and it stands alone in terms of the scale and the level of detail achieved. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 58

Henry Ryland, RI (British, 1856-1924)Christ in the garden of Gethsemane signed and dated 'HENRY RYLAND/1890' (lower right)pencil137 x 64cm (54 x 25 1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceSt Michael's School, Otford (the school's founder and friend of the artist, Rev'd Arthur Tooth).Private collection, UK (acquired from the above).Henry Ryland began his formal training at the South Kensington School of Art before going on to attend the Heatherley School of Fine Art. He completed his training under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian in Paris. When looking at Ryland's work, one can sense the influence of his education, as although there is a distinct Britishness to his subjects and composition, there is also a level of detail and quality to his draughtsmanship commensurate with training under two of the finest Orientalist painters in Europe. Throughout his career he turned his hand to a broad spectrum of artwork, including his widely exhibited oils and watercolours, but also as a designer in stained-glass, and illustrator for books and print adverts, notably for Pears soap. The present works (lots 58-60) showcase the truly wonderful quality of Ryland's draughtsmanship – so fine, with light, weight, and form beautifully observed. Not only do these drawings highlight his abilities as an artist but they also epitomise the combination of influences that can be seen to run through much of his career; notably, the neo-Classicism of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, which can be seen in the drapery and robes; the aestheticism of Albert Moore, seen in the tall composition of standing figures similar to Moore's female studies; and finally, the Pre-Raphaelites, and the religious subject matter which they often espoused. These are truly exceptional examples of not only Ryland's skill as a draughtsman, but also his awareness and sensibility towards those other artists working in Britain throughout his career. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AN ITALIAN CARVED AND POKERWORK DECORATED CHEST OR CASSONE 16TH CENTURY AND LATER Decorated throughout with scenes of figures in period dress, angels and animals, the lid to the lid opening to a polished platform surface, one 'secret' front panel opening to the lower 'cupboard' section, one side panel depicting family arms in the form of a hippocampus with latin motto beneath 'INTE DOMINE CONFIDO' and date 156673cm high, 172cm wide Purchased by the father of the current owner in 1942 from the sale of items from the estate of Thomas Baden Powell (Bannister & Co. The contents of High Hurst, Newick, 3rd June 1942, Lot 256.) Part of the original catalogue description in 1942 included the note '....believed salvaged from Spanish wreck off Beachy Head in 1747.... '. A printed copy of a photograph of the cover and appropriate page of the 1942 catalogue is available with this lot. The motto to the side panel relates to the Savoy family and is recorded on Torino coinage of the 1538-1580 period. Thomas Baden Powell (1864-1942) was son of William Baden Powell (d. 1885) squire/rector of Newick and cousin of Robert Baden Powell of Scouting fame.  This lot is accompanied by a framed print of a shipwreck off the coast of Sussex in the 18th century, which according to the current owner's family lore may relate to the chest and its salvage from a Spanish shipwreck.  Condition Report: Please note, this lot should be dated as '16th century and later' and not as originally catalogued. The penwork top, the front and the backboard are 16th century in date but the remaining structure around these elements is a later adaption (probably 19th century). This explains many of the quirks in the construction and adaptations that can be seen in the additional images. Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old chips and splits. Various adaptations and later elements - see images. Throughout the cassone there are various plugged holes, later screws/nails and old repairs - see images. The top when closed with ring marks, paint marks, vacant screw holes, old nails and scratches. There are also patch repairs made to the sides - see images. The backboard with old filler covering plugged holes to the dovetails at the sides. The underside of the top with some old repairs and small tacks/nails securing mouldings. One foot is detached but present. The cassone previously had six feet but the two to the centre of the front and back are now lacking. Some evidence of old worm. No key present, lock is open. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.  Condition Report Disclaimer

A GEORGE II MAHOGANY MECHANICAL BACHELOR'S CHEST OF DRAWERSIN THE MANNER OF THOMAS POTTER & JOHN KELSEY, CIRCA 1745The hinged top opening to a baize inset surface the rising sprung mechanism till with pigeon holes and drawers and released by brass knops to each side, with a lock to the back, above two short and one long false drawer front and two long drawers, one short false drawer hinging open to form a support for the top73cm high, 74cm wide, 37cm deep (when closed) It is possible that the maker is Thomas Potter of Holborn, who is recorded as being in partnership from the late 1730s with John Kelsey. It is believed that Potter & Kelsey made an eccentric repertoire of multi-purpose mechanical 'harlequin' furniture with sophisticated sprung mechanisms normally associated with German and continental production. See Christopher Gilbert and Tessa Murdoch, John Channon and brass-inlaid furniture 1730-1760, plate 11, for an advertisement print, signed Potter, showing related pieces with sprung mechanisms, including intricate designs including related side struts to the till and the brass release knops. The advertisement records ambitious designs showing that the maker was capable of producing highly specialised furniture, the detail with which the pieces are shown may suggest that they were Potter's own invention. See also plate VIII for a harlequin games table with a related mechanism. See Christie's, November 1990, Executors of the late Colonel William Stirling Keir, lot 59, for a table with a similar sprung mechanism rising till.     Condition Report: There are some marks, scratches, chips, splits, abrasions consistent with age and use, some to the extremities and edges. There is a darker mark/stain to the top.The brass knops to the side release the rising section, which rises but doesn't engage to sit quite level. It is possible to lift the rising section from the piece. This will probably require some attention to secure in place and operate as originally intended, the large metal sprung elements appear to be original Some sections of replacement and losses including: the green felt inset is later; there is a replacement section to the top of the hinged false drawer front that supports the hinged top; the brass oval escutcheons are replacements; some later blocks to the interior; there is a patch to the front of the lower drawer adjacent to the keyhole area; repairs to the feet. The handles appear to be original, they have been crudely gouged out to the interior of one drawer front No key present, the locks to the two drawers are open. Some splits to the drawer linings. There is some evidence of old worm. Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
