THE COCOANUTSReproduction One-Sheet (27.25" x 42.25") Autographed by Groucho MarxNear Mint Rolled Paramount, 1976In 1976, celebrity photographer Steve Schapiro had high-quality, full-size (27"x 41") prints made of the one-sheets for the Marx Brothers' "The Cocoanuts" and "Duck Soup" on heavy paper. His plan was to have Groucho Marx hand-sign each in pencil with his full name, at which point Schapiro would add the edition number. However, due in part to old age, Marx altered the "G" in "Groucho" while signing, after previously maintaining a consistent signature style for years. Consequently, genuine "Groucho" autographs from 1976, including the one made on this litho, are often considered dubious. In this case, it is definitively genuine, with authentication provided by Groucho's former personal secretary and UCLA archivist Steve Stolair. Stolair also consulted on a number of books and documentaries about his former boss's family. Paper featuring Marx's full signature after the mid-1950s is considered scarce. In addition to the Marx signature at the bottom of this print, the edition number "224/250" is handwritten in the lower left corner. This limited-edition lithograph exhibits a faint smudge line in the lower right corner. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Cain novella features one of Barbara Stanwyck's most outstanding performances as a woman who plots the murder of her husband to claim accident insurance. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. HEROES OF THE FLAMESOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Fine on Linen Universal, 1931The stunning stone litho one sheet offered here from the series' penultimate chapter, bringing the heat with its bold colors and dynamic design, features McCoy performing a heroic and dangerous rescue, a rare piece that shows him in action as something other than a cowboy. Prior to restoration, this poster had previous issues including fold and cross-fold wear, chipping, and pinholes in the corners. There have also been sporadic touch-ups to the backgrounds, plus some airbrushing including to the lower part of the dress around the center point cross fold, and the borders have been airbrushed. The poster now presents splendidly.Heroes of the Flames (1931), a serial starring Tim McCoy, best known for his cowboy roles, is Bob Darrow, the inventor of a new kind of chemical fire extinguisher, who must protect himself and his invention from the depredations of the evil Don Mitchell (Gayne Whitman), who wants not only Darrow's formula but his girlfriend, June Madison (Marion Shockley), as well. Unsurprisingly, many of the cliffhangers in this serial involve major characters trapped in burning buildings, requiring the heroic efforts of local firefighters to rescue them. Though lost for decades, a single print of this film was recently discovered and subsequently preserved by Universal. It's notable for McCoy's performance and early appearances by future Western stars Andy Devine, Walter Brennan, and Bruce Cabot. McCoy was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and passed in 1978, leaving behind a legacy as one of the great Western stars of the silver screen. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. JAMES BOND: GOLDFINGERUS Subway (43.5" x 59")Very Fine- on Linen United Artists, 1964This is a very scarce US Subway poster advertising the immediate post-premiere release of Goldfinger in two New York cinemas, the DeMille and Coronet Theatres on the 22nd Dec. 1964 (the film premiered at the DeMille the day before on the 21st). The print run for such a large poster for just two cinemas would have been very small, making this piece both limited and unique. This Subway poster on linen has had touch-ups to the fold lines, cross folds, and light scattered creasing, as well as some minor sporadic letter touch-ups in the lower area. All borders have been airbrushed, as has the white theater box in the lower left corner. There is also a small tear in the upper left border.Directed by Guy Hamilton, this third Bond movie set the template for every 007 adventure that followed, with its heady cocktail of girls, gadgets, comedy, thrills, and an outlandish villain played by Gert Frobe with dubbing by British actor Michael Collins. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. CONAN THE BARBARIANHand Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Screen Print (36" x 24"); 448/450Mint Rolled; Artist Martin Ansin Mondo, 2013A Conan The Barbarian Screen Print by Martin Ansin with intense colors and muscle-bound imagery that is both Hand Signed by Ansin and Hand Numbered 448/450 in the bottom right corner in pencil. Through creative vision and original inspiration, Alternative Art in the form of Limited Edition Screen and Giclee Prints has vastly become a big part of the movie poster collecting industry amongst artists, fans, and galleries. With some starting as early as the 2000s, companies like Mondo, Spoke Art Gallery, Bottleneck Galleries, Vice Press, Mad Duck Posters, Skuzzles, and more have procured some of the most talented artists in the world to create lush and loving fan-desired art that was never available before. What began as a very small alternative for those seeking something unique from their favorite film has turned into a major industry where the best posters can sell out in a matter of minutes. Renowned names like Drew Struzan, Roger Kastel, Laurent Durieux, Tyler Stout, Olly Moss, Ken Taylor, Killian Eng, Mark "Jock" Simpson, Steve Chorney and so many others have shown there is indeed demand for amazing art that is sometimes as good as or even better than the original posters from a film. The print is in mint condition showing no signs of being used or displayed. It shows only the most minimal signs of handling.Based on Robert E. Howard's pulp-fantasy hero, John Milius' gritty fantasy epic gave Arnold Schwarzenegger his breakthrough starring role as the titular adventurer, out to avenge the murder of his parents by cult leader Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones). This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. MARILYN MONROE SATURDAY EVENING POST MAGAZINENewstand Poster (39.5" x 28")Very Fine- on Linen Curtis Publishing, 1956The poster here, with a lovely coquettish image of Marilyn in a stunning red gown, promotes his eagerly anticipated article, which appeared after Monroe's return to Hollywood (she had filmed Bus Stop [1956] just before this article saw print, and was preparing for her marriage to Arthur Miller), and was entering on what many see as one of the most productive and successful periods of her life. This poster prior to restoration had very mild fold and edge wear, including sporadic tiny tears. There have been a few fold line touchups, and some scattered airbrushing in the borders. The image and poster display strikingly. In 1955, Marilyn Monroe, the famous platinum blonde with a seductive voice, completed filming The Seven Year Itch. After her divorce from Joe DiMaggio, she left Hollywood for New York with the intention of remaking herself as an actress. Unfortunately, the gossip columns were not supportive of her decision and heavily criticized her for attempting something that they believed was beyond her capabilities. However, reporter Peter Miller managed to secure an in-depth interview with her for The Saturday Evening Post. In addition to his own observations about Monroe, including her tendency to be late, he succeeded in getting her to open up about her life, career, and hopes for the future, which few reporters had been able to do. The resulting article was published in three parts in the Post, starting on May 5, 1956.This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th.
