A Ship's Bell From The K-Class Destroyer HMS Kelvin, English, circa 1939,the brass bell with iron clapper and knotwork lanyard,12in (30.5cm) high; 12 1/4in (31cm) max. diameterFootnotes:Provenance:Commander John Hamilton Allison saw much action during WWII and while CO of HMS Worcester he played a vital part in evacuating of troops in 1940 from the beaches at Dunkirk. In 1944, whilst commander of HMS Kelvin, he was involved in the Normandy landings code named 'Operation Overlord'. HMS Kelvin was a K-class destroyer built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Govan, Scotland and launched in 1939. Kelvin fought in several theatres during the Second World War. During Operation Overlord she was assigned to Task Force D, and was tasked at dawn on 6 June 1944 to bombard the German positions in the area of Sword Beach. The destroyer had the honour having on board Prime Minister Winston Churchill who visited the Normandy front on June 12, 1944, and to participate in the meetings of the Chiefs of Staff.A Daily Express article illustrates the HMS Kelvin's feline mascot Splinters, sat atop the ship's bell in September 1940.
