Letters, legal matters, revisions, business visitors down here. American Proofs, then English Proofs - it has been endless. The Publishers accepted it in four days. And the Literary Guild, which is the largest of all the American Book Clubs, made it their November selection. There have been three poor notices - one in the New Yorker and two in provincial papers - and a couple of 'middling' ones; but the great majority... have been most excellent. This is really rather a miracle, because the book is so very English...", folds, last leaf left margin chewed by Smith's dog, Folly, slightly creased.⁂ I Capture the Castle, "a captivating story located in a medieval castle she had seen at Wingfield, Suffolk, in 1934, and written in the form of the diary of Cassandra Mortmain, aged seventeen, essentially based on the young Dodie. It was an instant success in the USA and in Britain, and its wit and charm, with its appeal to readers of all ages, has kept it in print ever since." - Oxford DNB.

The frontispiece was the first portrait Milton had published of himself, however he was so unimpressed with the likeness that he insisted on the inclusion of the Greek inscription below that openly mocked the image ("my friends, looking at my countenance, know not whom it represents, but laugh at the awkward imitation of the stupid artist"). The present collection includes all bar two of Milton's poems written up to this point and other than 'Comus', 'Lycidas' and a few minor works is the first appearance in print for the majority of his poetic works.
