Leo Whelan RHA (1892-1956) OUR LADY QUEEN OF IRELAND, 1933 signed colour print signed in pencil in the margin and signed in the plate lower right; with title printed lower centre and a message from His Holiness, Pope Pius XI printed lower right and dated Sunday June 26, 1932 In its original frame of M.H. Gill O'Connell Street Dublin. The oil of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland was commissioned by the Gill family of Dublin - owners of the publishing company, which later became Gill and Macmillan. The model for Our Lady was Sarah ('Sally') Byrne (later Deale), a student of Seán Keating's at the College of Art and later a staff member there. Her portrait was widely painted by her contemporaries at the time, including Keating whose son Justin was the model for the figure of the child in the present work. Justin later became a Labour Party minister in the 1970s government of Liam Cosgrave. In his article - Taking a politician unawares - for the Irish Times on June 16, 2012 Michael Parsons reflected on the artwork commissioned for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin 80 years ago and focused on the present work. Parson's noted that, "…According to the Catholic Bulletin, a framed print [similar to the present example we can assume] was presented to Pope Pius XI in the Vatican in 1934 and the artist was praised for depicting the "Madonna", for the first time, with "Gaelic features"." 12¼ x 10¼in. HILLARY EDMUND: (1919-2008) New Zealand Mountaineer, the first man, with Tenzing Norgay, to reach the summit of Mount Everest, 1953. A superb vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph by Hillary, a silver gelatin print depicting the mountaineer in a rugged and windswept head and shoulders pose wearing a thick anorak, the collars turned up to protect his neck. Photograph by Karsh of Ottawa and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('E. P. Hillary') in dark fountain pen ink to the image. Signed photographs of Hillary of this quality are rare and desirable. About EX Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) Armenian-Canadian Photographer, one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. Karsh took the present image of Hillary in 1960. Hillary, alongside Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, became the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29th May 1953. The New Zealander had become interested in mountaineering while in secondary school and had made his first major climb in 1939. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition Hillary reached the South Pole overland in 1958 and subsequently reached the North Pole, making him the first person to reach both poles and summit Everest. Hillary and Tenzing were part of the ninth British expedition to Mount Everest, led by John Hunt, and following his ascent of Everest, Hillary devoted most of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Time magazine named Hillary one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. On Rebecca 'The heroine was nameless on purpose'.A good A.L.S., Daphne du Maurier, two pages, 8vo, Fowey, Cornwall, 21st August 1942, to Miss. Pottinger and Miss. Hurst. Du Maurier writes 'I am glad you enjoyed the story of "Rebecca"' and continues to answer her correspondent's questions, '1. The heroine was nameless on purpose, because I wished to see if it were possible to write a complete story without once giving a name to the chief character. And I succeeded! 2. The second question is too difficult to answer. No author can say why he or she thinks of a particular theme. The idea just comes slowly, and is then worked out on paper'. Some light age wear and a few small, neat splits at the edges of the folds, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG A scarce vintage letter in which the novelist comments on one of her most famous works. Rebecca (1938) has had a significant impact on popular culture, not least through the 1940 Academy Award winning film adaptation of the novel, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine and Judith Anderson. The best-selling novel has never gone out of print.
