Lot 288

Follower of Robert Walker Portrait of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), half-length in armour holding a baton in his right hand oil on canvas89 x 60.5cm together with a print of the Cromwell family treeThe present portrait appears to derive from the three-quarter length original by Robert Walker of circa 1649, now in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but generally in plane. The paint layers are stable and secure. The thin paint passages have suffered from wear and abrasion in the past. Areas of overpaint are present across the painting which have slightly darkened with age. The overpaint covers damage and reinforces areas of the composition which are worn, such as the sitter’s thumb. The varnish has yellowed with age and is thick and glossy with mottled spots across the surface and dust. 17th centuryFramed 99.5 x 71cm
