America and Canada important first part of an autograph letter from Joseph Delaplaine to a correspondent in Philadelphia dated August 21st 1817 asking the owner of a portrait of President John Adams to borrow it in order to engrave a copy for his work ‘The Repository of the Lives & Portraits of Distinguished Americans’ and also to provide a ‘ sketch or memoir of Mr Adams life...some time ago at my request Mr Adams sent to me the following facts of his life which I think proper to give you as in the event of your kindness to undertake it you may derive some assistance from them ...’ He then provides the passage which covers some two pp of the letter. The final part of this letter is missing but the memoir provided to Delaplaine by John Adams is complete and of considerable interest. The first volume of Delaplaine’s book was first published in Philadelphia in 1815. A second volume appeared in 1816 but part two of it appears not to have been published – in the present letter Delaplaine refers to his ‘heavy & expensive undertaking’. Together with a small group of America and Canada related documents including a fine coloured print of sailors attacking polar bears a ms note of the sale of lands in Florida including a ‘negro slave named Tom’ an ms document dated September 30th 1825 being a Privy Council order that Lt Col Joseph Wells and James Macauley be constituted members of the Executive Council of Upper Canada together with a related printed Act of Parliament dated 1764

Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857-1941): An Archive of Eighty-Five Watercolour Designs and Working Drawings for Tomkinsons Carpets, circa 1890`s, featuring flowing patterns incorporating birds, hearts, flowers and trees on square grids, thirty-five signed, forty-three unsigned and seven signed by W.B.Macdougall, some inscribed WORKED on the back, each has a "V" then numbers and have been archived, various sizes Voysey was under contract to both Alexander Morton and Tomkinson`s to provide a certain number of designs each year. Michael Tomkinson (1841-1921) of Franche Hall was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, the son of a mercer/draper. In partnership with textile engineer, William Adam, he established Tomkinson Carpets in 1869. For similar designs see The drawings collection of the RIBA held at the print room of the Victoria and Albert museum. Voysey donated important archival and source material to the Victoria and Albert museum, the British museum and the Royal Institute of British Architects in a series of gifts between 1913 and 1930.

A collection of prints & engravings of the exterior or interior of the Crystal Palace, c.1850s, including an unsigned watercolour exterior view with a bridge to the foreground measuring 15 x 25 cm, together with a small Baxter print within a decorative mount measuring 10.5 x 15 cm, a hand coloured lithograph titled `Transparent View of the Crystal Palace` published by Vickers and measuring 11.5 x 19 cm, plus other similar prints and engravings incl. A vintage gelatin silver print photograph of a crowd standing close to Bleriot`s aircraft near Dover Castle after completing the first crossing of the English Channel, 26th July 1909,the aircraft on the hillside in the same position as when photographed with Bleriot and his wife standing beside, chipped and torn with some loss to grass in foreground and hillside and sky in background, approx. 16.5 x 21.5 cm, laid onto a modern mount, together with a group of sixteen early aviation photographs of biplanes and monoplanes plus four photos of early motoring interest, all approx. 11 x 17 cm and sl. smaller, some marked as printed by F.W. Soul to versos and one pilot identified as Latham. The photograph of Bleriot`s monoplane has not been located in any other collection. (21)
* Ansaldo, Caproni & Pomilio. A miscellaneous collection of photographs from various sources including photographer Giuseppe Tosolini of Trieste, Museo Aeronautico Caproni di Taliedo, E. Sterza, and other press and private albums,aircraft types include restored Ansaldo SVA9 from the Fyfield Collection, with 5 x 12 contact print sheets, Caproni CA-42 triplane, the Ca-5 of 1911, Caproni 14 of 1912, the extraordinary ill-fated CA60, many WWI types with pilots and ground crews, good images of triplane bombers in flight, Count Caproni with American and British officers, a triplane CA-42 in background, and others of similar interest, including good copy photographs after the original of the Pomilio C1 in service, approx. 90 images contained in a folder, some showing signs of past damp damage (approx. 90)
