Gladstone sends his correspondents a manuscript (no longer present), being 'more than one half the copy for my proposed work on Homer', adding that the remainder will follow in six weeks and remarking 'But there will be nothing in it I think to vary any judgment you might form from the present copy….You will please bear in mind that my original idea was to write for the American public….and you should print in and for America. You however suggested that there should be a sub in England also. I would now ask you to consider freely the whole case and propose to me such an arrangement as you may consider suitable.' VG In 1890 Gladstone's work Landmarks of Homeric Study, Together with an Essay on the Points of Contact Between the Assyrian Tablets and the Homeric Text was published in London and New York by MacMillan & Co.
