PEDRO, D. (Conde de Barcelos).- NOBILIARIO | DE D. PEDRO | CONDE DE BARCELOS | HIJO DEL REY D. DIONIS | DE PORTVGAL. | ORDENADO Y ILVSTRADO | COM NOTAS Y INDICES | POR IVAN BAVTISTA LAVAÑA | CORONISTA MAYOR DEL REINO | DE PORTVGAL.- En Roma: Por Estevan Paolinio, 1640.- [14], 402, [36] p.: 1 gravura; 40 cm.- E., D. Pedro, Count of Barcelos (1287-1354), the natural son of King D. Dinis I, a prominent figure in the peninsular medieval culture. We owe him the compilation of songs by Galician-Portuguese troubadours, the «Crónica Geral de Espanha», from 1344 and the «Livro de linhagens», whose Livro Quatro or Nobiliário can be found here in its rare original edition (the second one was published in Madrid in 1646). The four parts of the «Livro de linhagens» (only fragments of the second and third books have survived) were only published in the 19th century, by Alexandre Herculano, in the collection «Portugaliae Monumenta Historica, série Scriptores». The structure of the copy is developed as follows: 1 - Half-Title(1 f.); 2 - Copperplate print allegorical title (missing, reproduced in photogravure); 3 - Title page (f. [+1]); 4 - Text «Al lector», signed by the printer Estevan Paolinio (f. +2);5 - Dedication to Manuel de Moura Corte-Real, 2nd marquis of Castel Rodrigo, signed by Juan Baptista Lavanha (f. +3 to +4 [blank verse]); 6 - Prologue by Count D. Pedro (f. +5); 7 - Index of Titles I, II and III (f. +6); 8 - Text, beginning with paragraph 16 of Title III (p. 1 to 402); 9 - Small note on the continuation of the Nobiliary (f. ll4 [blank verse]); 10 - Index of surnames [and titles] of this nobiliary (f. +1 to +4v); 11 - Index of the names of the men of this nobiliary (f. a1 to c1). Therefore, the copy does not include the «Notas del Marqves de Montebelo al Nobiliario del Conde D. Pedro» (p. 1 to 46) or the «Tablas» (4 f.) that are missing in most of the known copies. Slightly trimmed copy, with some wormholes: on the inner margin, next to the backbone, of f. 49/50 to f. 169/170, and of f. 327 /328 to the end, sometimes affecting the printed text. Title page with foreign ecclesiastical heraldic stamp and white Salema Garção seal. Recent binding, full natural sheepskin. Samodaes, 2366. Palau, 133210

CIRCLE OF SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS (1723-1792) An oil on canvas portrait thought to depict a young Charles James Fox (1749-1806), son of Henry Fox 1st Baron of Holland (1705-1774) and future prominent Whig statesman, Foreign Secretary.59cm x 44.5cmFox was a gambling addict, womaniser, debtor, and dandy who was forgiven his failings by many because of his defence of civil liberty and his overwhelming charisma. This painting is perhaps a rare depiction of Fox as a young man, on the cusp of adolescence but still very much with an air of child-like innocence.Reynolds was known to have painted Charles Fox's portrait as an adult in 1783, as well as painting his father Henry Fox and Lady Caroline Fox in 1757.The work was reframed on the 23rd October 1987 at Colin Denny Ltd Fine Art Dealers in Chelsea, London. There is another receipt possibly related to this painting from July 28th 1987 at Colin Denny Ltd Fine Art Dealers, which states 'reline with wax impregnation, clean and restore'.Inscription on the back of the stretcher reads: 'Charles James Fox 1747-1806 first son of Henry Fox first Lord Holland by Lady Caroline daughter of 2nd Duke of Richmond. Foreign Secretary 1780 and 1806. This information may have been taken from a label on the original frame before the 1987 re framing.See the link below for a comparatively young looking Charles James Fox after Reynolds: A mezzotint of a triple portrait with Charles James Fox standing beside Lady Susan Strangways at a corner of Holland House, both three-quarter length, Lady Susan holding dove in her hands; with Lady Sarah Lennox leaning out of window above, towards her. This print was made by James Watson after a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1832-1211-77
