IRISH ARTS REVIEW, VOLUMES 1-27 P Complete, 1984-2010, The first, second and third series complete to Winter 2010The set comprises sixteen quartely issues (1984-88), 14 annual volumes (1989-2002), and a further 35 quarterly issues in a slighly larger format (Summer 2002 to Winter 2010). There was a brief pause due to a change of ownership after Vol.18, hence Volume 19 has only three issues. A very good clean set as issued. Edited by Brian de Breffny, Homan Potterton, Alistair Smith and John Mulcahy, this is an authoritative and superbly illustrated series, with scholarly articles on virtually every Irish painter and sculptor of note.Indespensible to anyone seriously interested in Irish art of any period. The first and second series are entirely out of print, and complete sets are very difficult to obtain.
2 Souvenir phials of Veedol Oil drained from the tanks of Graf Zeppelin after the World Flight. 2 small glass phials, stoppered with cork, each in a cardboard lined metal canister (7cm high x 3cm diameter) with screw top. The paper labels proclaim “Veedol. Tydol. Guarantee. We guarantee that Veedol was used exclusively by the Graf Zeppelin and that this is an actual sample of the Veedol brought over and drained from her tanks. October 15, 1928. Tidewater Oil Company. New York”. The first canister, the label has been scraped, but the phial is intact. The second canister, the cork has leaked and the oil has soaked the cardboard and label, leaving the phial empty. Together with a Veedol Motorenöle Print leveraging the “Graf Zeppelin” World Flight. An interesting print of the Veedol Advert originally created by A.E.de Bruycker in 1929. The image shows an orange globe, girt around with Veedol Oil Cans, against a blue background. Floating serenely over the globe is the “Graf Zeppelin”. Original was printed by Hanseatischen Verlagsanstalt, Hamburg. This copy is framed, mounted and glazed (63cm x 87cm).GC See Plate 3
Display Model of the Akron Air dock. A model of the Goodyear-Zeppelin Air dock at Akron, Ohio. (127cm x 45cm x 26cm high) made of pressed steel. The model has clam-shell doors, originally opened by an electric motor, to display an emerging Goodyear-Zeppelin Airship. The base is painted grey, the Air dock is predominantly yellow and black. The original electric motor is still in place (not tested). Battered and scratched, this remains an interesting piece. Together with a black and white print of USS Akron (framed and Glazed (95cm x 29cm)) Below the print is a montage of clips giving facts about the USS Akron, and also the Goodyear Zeppelin Airship Dock. The print has water-stains and marking, and a band of packing-tape runs along the middle of the glazing.
Postcard made of Fabric from Vaniman’s “Akron” of 1912. A rectangular segment of stiff fabric (14cm x 9cm), presented as a souvenir postcard. The front has a print of the Airship “Akron” flying over the ocean with a passenger steamer in the distance. At the top left is a title “Souvenir of Balloon “Akron”” below which is the text “This sample of fabric was cut from the balloon Akron which is to carry Melvin Vaniman and party of six to Europe in October.” On the reverse is an address, a partial postal mark “Atlantic.” (the stamp is no longer present), and a message. The message reads “Dear Esther, Here we are in Atlantic City ready to see the balloon fly tomorrow. Have been up too see it. It’s wonderful. Lottie is here with us. All well.”. Together with a specification card for Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co, Akron, Ohio. The specification card gives details of Balloon Fabric and Aircraft Fabric, including weight/yd, price, tearing strength, diffusion of Hydrogen etc. Most fascinating insight into the response to commercial opportunities by Goodyear. Handwritten date of Feb 23 1910. VGC. Note: Melvin Vaniman built an Airship with the intention of crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. The ship was built by the Goodyear company of Akron, and named after the town of her construction. It was planned to depart in October 1912. On 2 July 1912, the Akron burst into flames and crashed, killing all on board. Later investigation indicated that internal pressure had caused the envelope to split. For picture See the-saleroom.com
Original Advert for Maybach Motors. Probably cut out of a magazine, now framed and glazed (31cm x 37cm), a colour print showing a speedboat bearing the Maybach Emblem, emerging from under a bridge, over which a luxury touring car is crossing at high speed. The ladies in the back of the touring car are waving up at the LZ-127 “Graf Zeppelin” which is passing low overhead. Below the picture is the mane “Maybach” printed full width, and then 6 lines of advertising text in German. Framed in original silver gilt wooden frame. VGC. See Front Cover

[2] A print of young lady, sitting on a flying carpet, wearing a wisp of smoke, while around her other flying machines can be seen against the night sky. Title at the bottom reads “Let’s go to America”. [3] An unused menu card, decorated on the left side with an colourful illustration of the French Dirigible “Le Patrie” passing over a military review on 14 July 1906. At the bottom of the menu is an advert for Benedictine Liqueur, and the description of the event. Menu shows some foxing. [2] “Los Angeles Moored after Flying Tests” The US Airship “Los Angeles” moored at the high mast at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. [3] “Mrs Coolidge Christens ZR3 “Los Angeles”” [4] “Shenandoah Tests Great Mooring Tower”. Each poster has a inset photo giving more detail of interest. Above the photo print is the the Associated News Service banner, below is the descriptive text and at the bottom is the date (on the right corner) and the volume/number information (bottom left). Russian Poster 1914 – “Heroic Defence of the Fortress of Liege by the Belgians” An interesting lithographic print showing the ramparts of Liège- on 6 August 1914, wreathed in the smoke of battle, with the Belgian Flag flying proudly above. In the distance, massed German battalions are advancing, flags flying, while nearby the Belgian defenders have engaged in a savage hand-to-hand fight causing some of the German troops to flee the melee. Overhead, a Zeppelin engaged in bombing activities explodes in fiery ruin. At the bottom left of the picture is “No 18”, and below are 3 columns of four lines each giving a description of the scene. The description starts “At the start of the Great European War Belgium declared it’s neutrality, but the Germans invaded Belgium in order to attack our ally France without suffering heavy losses.”GC
