First and rare edition - in a precious presentation copy - of this popular and highly interesting novel by the physician and writer Francesco Pona (1595-1655), which narrates the adventures of the 'condottiero' Ormondo and his beloved Rosidora, on the background of the wars between England and Scotland. The volume also contains the rare first edition of the first work in print by the prolific writer from Parma Ferrante Pallavicino (1615-1644). Dorso ampiamente restaurato e parzialmente ricoperto in vitello. Copia di dono dell'autore, come attesta la nota manoscritta alla carta di guardia anteriore 'Don de l'Autheur 1636 [...]', ex-libris manoscritto al frontespizio della prima opera 'ex libris francisci [...] Medici'. Ex libris di Alberto Francesco Floncel al contropiatto anteriore e al verso del frontespizio di entrambe le opere. Prima e rara edizione di questo fortunato romanzo eroico-galante, redatto dal medico e letterato Francesco Pona (1595-1655), incentrato sulle vicissitudini del condottiero Ormondo e dell'amata Rosidora, sullo sfondo dello scontro tra Inghilterra e Scozia. L'opera è assai interessante poiché propone tutto il repertorio topico della narrazione romanzesca barocca: le stesse avventure dei protagonisti sono ridotte a semplice cornice di cinque autonomi inserti novellistici. Il volume, impreziosito dall'invio autografo di Francesco Pona, accoglie anche la rara prima edizione dell'opuscolo che inaugurò l'intensa attività letteraria dello scrittore parmense Ferrante Pallavicino (1615-1644), Il sole ne' pianeti, un panegirico in lode di Venezia che gli fu utile per entrare nei favori della classe dirigente della Repubblica di San Marco. An early Worcester coffee cup: with grooved loop handle decorated with a coloured transfer print of 'The Fortune Teller, no. 2', after Robert Hancock depicting a lady and companion outside a country house in conversation with the fortune teller, her baby on her back and a further child at her feet, a lake in the background, circa 1754-55, 6 cm. high.
A First Period Worcester teapot and cover: of baluster shape with flower finial and entwined branch handle, transfer printed and coloured with 'The Two Bridges' print after Robert Hancock to one side and 'Ruins' to the other, underglaze blue crossed swords mark with numeral 9 and dot, circa 1770, 15 cm. high.
A Chinese export cup and saucer: painted in sepia monochrome with a European river landscape with a fisherman and water buffalo in the foreground within line and lattice borders, Jiaqing, diameter of saucer 14 cm [damage to rim of saucer].* Notes the decoration reputedly based on an 18th century print of a view on the River Thames at Marlow.
