Hill (David Octavius & Adamson, Robert). Two carbon print portraits of Rev Dr Thomas Chalmers, both carbon prints made by Jessie Bertram in 1916 from Adamson's original salt print paper negatives of 1840s, each approx. 15 x 11 cm, pasted into the front and rear of a copy of Chalmers's Correspondence, ed. William Hanna (1853), spotting throughout, ink stain at foot affecting text block edges and upper cover, presentation inscription to Anne J. Guthrie from her husband in 1916 and below it the initials J.W.B. [Jessie Bertram?], dated 1st August 1921, orig. cloth, rubbed, 8vo The painting of 'The General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland; Signing the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, 18th May 1843', is important as being the first work of art painted with the help of photographic images. The painting took Hill twenty-three years to complete. Chalmers was the central figure in the Disruption picture and Moderator of the Disruption Assembly. Jessie Bertram made a series of carbon print copies from the original negatives in 1916 including these two of Chalmers. (1)

Lawrence (Thomas Edward, 1888-1935). A group of eleven black and white photographs, c. 1918 to 1970s, two vintage prints showing Lawrence full-length [as Aircraftman T.E. Shaw at Miranshah, 1928], one with small coffee stain at uppe margin, both approx. 20 x 15 cm, plus two photos during his period with Power Boats , eqarly 1930s, one a portrait the other with TEL barely visible in the cockpit of RAF 202, two reprint photo prots. including one by Howard Csoter, a vintage black and white print of numerous Arabs on camels [possibly Feisal's army] with blindstamp American Colony, Jerusalem, approx. 17 x 23 cm, marked on thre verso property of E[ric] H. Kennington Estate, plus a small snapshot showing TEL with three other soldiers (Karachi), a tiny snapshot portrait fo Dr Salame (Akabar, 1919), plus two reprints of TEL's mother and brother, plus tow printed items, a copy of the Order of Service for TEL's funeral at St Paul's Catheral, sl. soiled and creased, plus a printed card that Lawre4nce sent out to correspondents 'To tell you that in future I shall write very few letter. T.E.S.' (13)
