Peter Lanyon (British, 1918-1964)Untitled rubbing on paper31.5 x 38cm (12 3/8 x 14 15/16in).Executed circa 1949-60Footnotes:The present lot is a rubbing taken from an original slate-cut master which is in the Peter Lanyon Archive. Lanyon used a wide range of print techniques, including lithography, screenprinting, and drypoint, as well as car number-plate rubbings done while he was in America and rubbings from gravestones in Cornwall in the early 1960s. The original slate which this rubbing was taken from was probably first engraved in 1949, but the date the present lot was created is less certain and could be as late as 1961-3. The right-hand image in the present lot was carved to illuminate a poem that Peter Lanyon wrote circa 1949. The second verse of this poem actually became the inscription on his gravestone at Lelant Church in 1964. The left-hand image is of the final state of this slate-cut which is a more worked-on version of a 1949 print he titled Homo Diluvii Testis. The present lot is extremely rare and until now was not recorded in or known to the Peter Lanyon Archive. We are grateful to Martin Lanyon for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
