Archive of manuscript correspondence and notes relating to the 1812 tour of the famous Craven Heifer - England's fattest ever cow. The heifer, bred by Rev William Carr on the Duke of Devonshire's Bolton Abbey estate in Craven, attracted crowds of paying spectators when she was exhibited at numerous towns and cities during a tour to Smithfield Market in 1812. The archive includes approximately 30 handwritten letters, mostly addressed to Henry Pickop at Bolton Abbey, reporting back to the estate on how the tour is going, and recording the money received in selling tickets and prints (the engraving of the Craven Heifer by John Whessel after F. Fryer) and expenses (for instance barns, hay, straw, corn and cabbage). The letters describe difficult days with no success and poor weather, and more profitable days with crowds and good takings. To include a letter to John Whessel (engraver) from Henry Pickop, 8 February 1812, 'When I received your last letter I fully expected you would have sent a proof print to Mr Carr before this time. The proprietors and Subscribers are now quite impatient to have the Engraving ready. Although I concur with you in the propriety of giving time for the execution of the work in a masterly manner, yet I hope you will hasten the business as fast as possibly you can...P.s. The Heifer has been in London about ten days'; a letter from John Whessel (engraver), 2 February 1812, 'With this you will receive a finished proof of the Heifer & hope it will meet with your approbation - Mr Carr and myself have compared it with the picture and I believe there is not any (that I can see) can be done to make it more like.' The archive also includes a quantity of loose manuscript notes recording expenses such as 'meat and drink', 'ale', and various mail coaches (Birmingham to Oxford, for example); a book of subscribers, handwritten names on printed sheets detailing proposals of the engraving (the list includes the Duke of Devonshire and Rev. William Carr), bound in paper covers, the final manuscript leaf recording the size/dimensions of the heifer itself; an original advertising bill, printed by Griffith Wright, Leeds, 'The Wonderful Four Year-old Short-Horned Craven Heifer, fed and bred by the Rev. William Carr, of Bolton-Abbey...Will be shewn at [unused]...Admittance for each Person is 1s. N.B. This Beast is allowed by all who have seen her to be the largest and fattest of her Age, of any ever shewn in England.
