STEVE MCCURRY (AMERICAN b. 1950),SHARBAT GULA, AFGHAN GIRL, PAKISTAN offset lithographic colour print, signed in pen lower right image size 49cm x 33cm, overall size 76cm x 58cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Steve McCurry took his most recognised portrait, ''Afghan Girl'', in a refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan in 1984. The image itself was named as ''the most recognised photograph'' in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. The photo has also been widely used on Amnesty International brochures, posters, and calendars. The identity of the ''Afghan Girl'' remained unknown for over 17 years until McCurry and a National Geographic team located the woman, Sharbat Gula, in 2002.
* IAIN FAULKNER (SCOTTISH b. 1973),MUSElimited edition giclee print on paper, signed and numbered 43/150, titled certificate versoimage size 51cm x 51cm, overall size 83cm x 81cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: certificate of authenticity attached verso.Note 2: Scottish artist Iain Faulkner graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1996 with a BA in Fine Art. He has had numerous solo shows in the UK, USA, France, Switzerland, Spain and Italy. He is represented by the prestigious Albemarle Gallery (London). His work appears in many private and corporate collections and in 2010 he was commissioned to paint the European Ryder Cup Team member portraits. Faulkner's work highlights moments of withdrawal and consolidation, where the subject turns inward. The images imply a sense of a nomadic existence. The fact that the face is obscured or turned away, allows us to see the figure as an everyman, a player both familiar and universal. They conjure ideas of modern-day, male heroes. Solitary and brooding, these figures suggest alienation, but also speak of autonomy and resilience. Many of Iain Faulkner's paintings have been published as limited edition fine art prints and they sell in prolific numbers. His original work very rarely appears at auction but a 150 x 150cm oil on canvas titled ''At The Bar'' sold at McTear's 17.11.2013 lot 1829 for £5800 (hammer) and his limited edition signed prints have sold more than once in our auctions for prices of £500 (hammer).
* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008),IN THOUGHTS FROM THE VISIONS OF THE NIGHT WHEN DEEP SLEEP FALLETH ON MEN (1930) lithograph on paper, signed in pencil, titled and dated 1930image size 36cm x 25cm, overall size 55cm x 40cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).
