° ° Stevenson, Robert Louis - Treasure Island, 1st edition, 1st issue, half-title, map frontispiece, 4pp. advertisements, 8vo, original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black endpapers, a late 19th century? ink manuscript inscription ‘’Bonhams’’ to map verso, a black and white photograph of the authors house in Monterey, loosely inserted, Cassell & Company, Limited, London, 1883 This copy has the points indicative of earliest issue: four pages of advertisements at end, dated 783 [July 1883], "dead man's chest" not capitalised on page 2, line 6, nor page 7, line 19; the first letter of "vain" broken in the last line, page 40; the "a" not present in line 6, page 63; the "7" not present in the pagination of page 127; the full stop not present following "opportunity" in line 20, page 178; and "worse" in line 3, page 197.The book was published on November 14, 1883, with an initial print run of 2,000 copies. Of these, the first 750 were bound with advertisements dated ‘’5G-783’’ (July 1883), as seen in this copy. Editions featuring the July advertisements exist in various cloth colors, including green, red, and blue, with no confirmed precedence (see Carter, p. 154).

Biographical details of each sitter, by Francis Wyndham, the editor of Queen, printed on the reverse of each print.Sitters include: Mick Jagger; John Lennon and Paul McCartney; Susan Murray; David Hockney; Gerald McCann; Terence Stamp; Jean Shrimpton; Michael Caine; Susan Murray; Lord Snowdon; Michael Cooper; Cecil Beaton and Rudolf Nureyev; Mick Jagger and Max Maxwell; Terence Donovan.PROVENANCE: Gifted by David Bailey, to the current owner, whilst working at Vogue Magazine in the 1960’s.Note: David Bailey’s Box of Pin-Ups, released in 1965, is a loose collection of 36 portraits showcasing the fashionable elite of the time. As described on the cover, the images reflect Bailey’s personal world of fashion, pop music, and the Ad Lib nightclub. Each portrait is paired with notes by Francis Wyndham, a writer, literary editor, and journalist. Together, the collection captures the essence of the burgeoning celebrity culture of the 1960s, with many portraits becoming iconic representations of London’s cultural figures during the Swinging Sixties. Notably, only four of the “pin-ups” are women, including Jean Shrimpton, one of the most famous models of the era who collaborated almost exclusively with Bailey.
