WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Wellington, one page, 8vo, London, 11th May 1820, to a gentleman (probably George Hayter, 1792-1871, English Painter). Wellington announces `I don`t know whether the Duke of York will permit that the print should be dedicated to him` and continues `As I never give such formal permission myself I cannot ask him to do so`. In concluding he confirms that he will subscribe for four of the first fifty proofs. Together with a second A.L.S., Wellington, one page, 8vo, Stratfield Saye, 4th December 1821, to a gentleman (probably also George Hayter), regarding a picture. Very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG, 2
CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. A very fine, large signed colour 14.5 x 21 print, being an attractive reproduction of the painting entitled Profile for Victory (1942) by artist A. Egerton Cooper, depicting Churchill seated in a half length pose, in profile, holding a large lit cigar in one hand. Signed (`Winston S. Churchill`) in bold fountain pen ink and dated 1949 in his hand to the lower white border which also features a printed calligraphic caption. Neatly mounted and professionally matted in blue to an overall size of 20 x 27. An appealing signed image of Churchill featuring an excellent signature. Rare in this form. VG Alfred Egerton Cooper (1883-1974) was one of Churchill`s favourite portrait painters. Profile for Victory was considered by Cooper to be his finest work and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1943. It was later published as a morale-boosting poster for the general public.
