A superb painter and draughtsman, the multi-talented Byrne was also a first-class playwright (‘The Slab Boys’, ‘Tutti Frutti’), his ear for dialogue was as acute (and witty) as his eye for detail. Much of his subject matter in both disciplines is overtly autobiographical, he often included or refers to the Teddy Boy/Rock and Roll era of his youth. Byrne designed record covers for Donovan, The Beatles, Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly. His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad. Several of his paintings hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.

He made a dramatic debut into the world of public sculpture in 1983 when he constructed the submarine Polaris out of thousands of tyres on the South Bank of the Thames. Other projects include the Big Heids on the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Mach's strikingly original sculptures and collages are created from found materials - coathangers, postcards, matches etc. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1998.
* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), GARDEN (1932) lithograph on paper, signed in pencilmounted, framed and under glassimage size 33cm x 28cm, overall size 54cm x 44cm Note: "Garden (1932)" is one of the rarest Hannah Frank signed prints. A previous example of this print was sold (by McTear's) for £650 (lot 526 The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction 27th September 2020). Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

Devoid of emotion or expression, their anonymity opens them up to individual interpretation, creating a unique bond with the viewer. * FRANCES WALKER CBE RSA RSW (SCOTTISH b. 1930) UNTITLED limited edition colour woodblock print on paper, signed and numbered 18/45unframedoverall size 31cm x 31cmNote: born in Kirkcaldy in 1930 Frances Walker studied at Edinburgh College of Art and then took up a post as visiting teacher of art for the Hebrides . This experience engendered in her a life-long love of wild and desolate places and since then she has chosen to depict the most remote landscapes, her compositions usually based on coastal reaches, craggy rocks and deserted beaches. Moving to Aberdeen , Walker took up a post at Gray's School of Art where she taught for many years. After retirement she has since divided her time between Aberdeen and the Western Isles, especially Tiree, where she owns a thatched cottage, but more recently has also travelled further afield - her latest inspiration being the even wilder and more desolate landscape of Iceland.

* ALEXANDER MILLAR (SCOTTISH b. 1960), OVER THE SEA limited edition giclee print on paper, signed and numbered 3/95mounted, framed and under glassimage size 46cm x 36cm, overall size 79cm x 67cm Note: Ayrshire born Alexander Millar, one of the UK’s most loved and collectable artists, is a self-taught, contemporary impressionist artist, whose work depicts the small wonder of the everyday. He is one of the few living artists in the UK who have had museum exhibitions in Newcastle (The Great North: Hancock), Glasgow (Scotland Street Museum) and New York (The Fire Dept. Museum of New York). His work has also been displayed in public venues, such as shopping centres and metro carriages, as well as being used as scenic backdrops for theatrical productions. His atmospheric landscapes capture memories of life in the 50's and 60's and his impressionist brush strokes and tones create a romantic view of that era, often playing with the effect of light as it is reflected on a wet tiled roof, transporting the viewer back to the cityscapes of their own childhood. From an early age he has viewed his surroundings and the people he grew up with as if they were a carefully choreographed street ballet: old men on bikes coming home from a hard day’s graft, the gossiping women standing on the street corner or the working man staggering home after a payday night on the town.

YUYA HASHIZUME, EYEWATER ANIMAL VET, CALICO Inkjet print, signed and marked APunframed overall size 40cm x 40cmProvenance: donated by the artist for the 2022 Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity Auction at McTear's on 28 October 2022Note: Japanese illustrator Yuya Hashizume creates silkscreen prints and acrylic paintings depicting cartoon figures caught in moments of vulnerability. Hashizume became known for his “eyewater” series, which portrays adolescents with single tears running down their faces. Inspired by manga cartoons like Fujiko Fujio’s “Doraemon” series, Hashizume favors bold lines and simple, flat planes of color, a style that reflects his past work in advertising and which also focuses attention on his subjects’ facial expressions. Hashizume’s illustrations explore themes like the artifice of intimacy and the suppression of sadness in a hyper-paced world.

* TOM MACKENZIE (SCOTTISH 1947 - 2018), LOCHANS, LEWIS limited edition colour etching on paper, signed, titled and numbered 28/75mounted, framed and under glassimage size 23cm x 46cm, overall size 42cm x 66cm Note: Tom MacKenzie was educated at Portree High School and at 17 left home to enrol at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee. In 1976 he moved back to Scotland, joining a team of many talents at the Glasgow Print Studio. John Taylor, a colleague and long-time friend, says: "Tom MacKenzie’s art was made from the Isle of Skye’s unique cornucopia of visual riches: the huge, notched and jagged coastline; sea lochs with many rocky islands; the Cuillins, the most awesome mountains in Britain." Living and working on the lovely Isle of Skye, Tom MacKenzie was renowned for his wonderful colour etchings of the island and the West Coast of Scotland. These large and very stylish etchings are appreciated and collected worldwide. Working from his studio and workshop in Portree, the island’s capital, Mackenzie used three steel plates to produce his etchings and limited the editions to 75 or less, printed on 300gm, Arches waterleaf paper. He was a very popular figure in Portree where he lived and worked and a much-respected artist throughout Scotland and far beyond. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021, three colour etchings by Tom Mackenzie sold for hammer prices of £300, £320 and £340.
