Walker (George). The Battle of Waterloo. A Poem, 1st edition, G. Walker, 1815, 77pp., adverts to final leaf verso, title and final leaf chipped at edges with loss not affecting text, some browning and finger soiling throughout, lacks final advert leaf, modern marbled boards with manuscript paper label to spine, small 8vo (A rare copy of a poem written soon after the event, to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Waterloo, and preceded by a short description of the battle itself. Kent & Co., 1859, title and text printed in red, black and white illustrations to text throughout, original publisher's cloth, blind and gilt decorated, 4to, together with Moore (James Carrick), The Life of Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore, 2 volumes, John Murray, 1833, black and white portrait frontispiece to volume 1 (captioned in ink A Miserable Print from a Bad Picture), some scattered spotting, manuscript annotation to title from Mrs Carrick Moore - a woman of too much sense and spirit to like this pitiful production so unworthy of the great man, autograph of Sir John Moore pasted onto upper pastedown, modern red straight-grain morocco (by Bayntun Riviere), gilt decorated spine, 8vo, plus Ballantyne (R.M.), Up in the Clouds, or Balloon Voyages, James Nisbet & Co., 1880, black and white frontispiece, additional engraved title, original publisher's cloth, a little rubbed and scuffed at extremities, small 8vo, and other 19th and 20th century titles, including illustrated literature, biography, air travel and exploration (6 shelves)
Watson (Joseph). Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb; or, A Theoretical and Practical View of the Means by which they are Taught to Speak and Understand a Language; Containing Hints for the Correction of Impediments in Speech: together with A Vocabulary Illustrated by numerous Copperplates, representing the most common Objects necessary to be named by Beginners, 2 volumes, 1st edition, Darton and Harvey, 1809-10, eighty engraved plates, slightly offset and one with short closed tear to one corner, first volume with frontispiece lacking (Manual Alphabet plate), early ownership signature at head of title-page, and faint creasing to lower outer corners, bookticket of Lawrence Darton on front pastedowns, modern half morocco, 8vo Provenance: from the library of a descendant of the publisher William Darton. See Darton G1026. Scarce first exposition in print of the teaching methods of Thomas Braidwood (1715-1806), the pioneer teacher of deaf and mute children. Joseph Watson (1765-1829) was Braidwood's nephew, and he attended his uncle's school in Mare Street, Hackney, before going on to be appointed headmaster of the Asylum for Educating the Deaf and Dumb Children of the Poor in the Kent Road in 1792. The pictorial vocabulary includes a large number of scenes of trade and commerce, household objects, and natural history subjects. (2)
*Jigsaw. Prince Lee Boo, [James Izzard, 1818?], hand-coloured engraved wooden jigsaw puzzle, with thirty-six pieces forming twelve scenes, each with printed caption below image, lightly dust-soiled, three lugs lacking and one piece supplied in facsimile, 26 x 19cm (10.25 x 7.5ins), together with a new edition of The History of Prince Lee Boo, published by Wetton, circa 1828, disbound, 12mo Hannas, pp.129-30. Extremely rare early jigsaw. The only other copy we have traced is that in the private collection of Linda Hannas; her copy is housed in the original box, which carries the (partially erased) imprint on the label. The National Library of Australia holds a similar puzzle telling the story of Prince Lee Boo, published by William Darton in 1822 (with three replacement pieces). The Harry R. Beard print collection in the V & A has an uncoloured undissected engraving by Izzard in the same format, titled 'Gulliver or the Island of Laputa', published in 1818. (1)

Also those made for the Covers of the Issue in Parts and a Facsimile Print of the Merlin Drawing, J.M. Dent & Sons, 1927, black and white illustrations, including one tipped-in, some minor spotting and off-setting, free endpapers toned, top edges gilt, remainder untrimmed, original calf-backed vellum, gilt decorated, 4to Limited edition of 300 copies, this unnumbered. The British Burma Gazetteer, Compiled by Authority, 2 vols., Rangoon: The Government Press, 1879-1880, albumen print photograph frontispieces with original tissue guard (short repaired closed tear to mount), eight further albumen print photographs (including three cracked and torn) small hole (with some loss) affecting volume one, pp.17-38 (eleven leaves), long repaired closed tears affecting volume one pp.41/42, 143/144 and numerous leaves in volume two, numerous smaller closed tears (mostly marginal), pencil marginalia, slight worming, black half leather, 8vo Sold with all faults, not subject to return. A Lionel Edwards artist's proof print, The Kadir Cup, other assorted pictures and prints (qty) Condition report Report by RB Signed, very faded, published by Eyre and Spottiswoode, very faded, frame lacks glass. A pair of black and white prints, Black Game and Partridge shooting, both slightly faded, Black Game with tear, some water staining.
A Minton style majolica jardiniere, with lion mask handles (a.f.) 35 cm high, a Staffordshire style jug, decorated flowers, 17.5 cm, a firescreen, inset a Japanese panel decorated birds and foliage (some loss), 61 cm wide, and a print, View of Cape Town, from Table Bay (4) Condition report Report by GH One possibly restored chip to the rim. One of the foliate swags going from the mouth of the lion to the centre of the face of the jardiniere is broken off and missing in its entirety. The next swag along is cracked and has been re-glued. These things suggest that at one point it may have been dropped on its side. There do not appear to be any major structural cracks, just some crazing to the interior.
