(49.5cm.) high. *Condition:Very original condition - case is quite dirty but has a lovely colour. All brass inlays are complete. They are securely fixed overall - just two of the string inlays are lifting a little at the ends. Two chips to edge of gadrooned top to front and small chip to the back corners. Locks to dial glass and rear door working - key is rusty but original. Movement definitely original to case. A few old (inactive ) worm holes to top of back. Shrinkage crack down centre of right lower side of case, below the grille. Side moulding missing from the top right of case. Winds and runs but will almost certainly require cleaning and some work as it has not been serviced for decades. Winding key 20th century.

A mid-18th century oak longcase 30 hour clock by John Nethercott of Long Compton, Warwickshire, the square, 9in. brass dial signed to the Roman chapter ring, centred by engraved foliage, single pierced steel hand, gilt brass mask spandrels, fronting a chain driven bell strike movement with outside countwheel, the case with flared ogee moulded pediment, panelled trunk door on brass butterfly hinges, on a short, plain plinth base, 74in. (188cm.) high.* Provenance: Baggott Church Street Ltd., Stow-on-the-Wold, Glos., c.1988. Copy of original purchase invoice accompanies the lot.** Condition: The dial is too small for the hood mask, so it must be assumed that the movement is not original to the case. The movement appears to have been cleaned and restored, probably before purchased in 1988. The brass dial plate is missing three corners. There are some old worm holes (inactive) to the elm seat board, pine back and inside edge of the trunk door. The case has good colour and patina. The moulding around the trunk door is later, as it overlaps rather oddly over the butterfly hinges. Later iron weight. Losses to edge of wooden flange in lower trunk piece below the door. Large splits at top and bottom of back panel.
