Between 1890 and 1970, subsequent generations of the family expanded the business and H.Samuel became one of Britain's leading retail jewellers. It is now part of the Signet Group. The Heart in Hand is a symbol of a heart in an open palm and is symbolic of charity, given from the heart. It is an easily recognizable symbol in the Northeastern United States and used by the Shakers as a pictorial reminder of the words of 'Mother' Ann Lee, the founder of the Shaker sect, who promoted a simple life of hard work and spirituality, "Put your hands to work, and your hearts to God."The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, more commonly known as the Shakers, was founded in the early 18th century in Bolton, Lancashire. ‘Mother’ Ann Lee became their leader, and in 1774 Lee and her followers sailed from Liverpool to colonial America, with an initial settlement at Watervliet, New York. At its peak in the mid-19th century, there were 2,000–4,000 Shaker believers living in 18 major communities and numerous smaller, often short-lived, communities. As of 2019, there is only one active Shaker village: Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, in Maine. The engraved decoration of two seats of power in England and America may be symbolic and related to the Shakers. In addition, there may be a connection specifically with the Capitol building, which was also used for religious services in the early 1800s.
