1920s Maccabi Berlin boxing trophy,In the form of a WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) cup manufactured in silver-plated brass wares designed in the Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style, engraved with an “M” symbol and inscribed "J.B.C. Maccabi zum 30 Kampf gestiftet von Harry Stein" [translated: "Jewish Boxing Club Maccabi for 30 fights given to Harry Stein"], height 28cm.Harry Stein was born on January 20, 1905 in Bytom, Poland. He was one of the leading boxers in Germany during the 1920's and the German flyweight (51 kg) champion of 1922-23. Stein appeared as himself in the 1930 film "Liebe im Ring" (Love in the Ring), along with the boxers Jose Santa and Max Schmeling in the lead role as a boxer. In 1933 he left Berlin due to Nazi persecution and emigrated to Prague, from where he escaped to the Soviet Union to again get away from Nazi persecution. In the 1940's he was active as a trainer in Moscow. Up to his death, he trained Russian amateur boxers there. His exact date and place of death are unknown, but are thought to be no later than 1948. A 1932 photograph of the Maccabi Boxing Club of Berlin can be found on the net from the archives of the Jewish Museum of Berlin The identical “M” Maccabi symbol on this trophy can be seen on the boxers trunks in the photograph.
