A complete cast copper-alloy bracelet or arm-ring of the so-called 'Liss type', dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1400-1200 BC. The bracelet is circular in plan with an oval section, decorated all over its surface with incised linear, herringbone and 'eye' shaped motifs within panels. Preserved extremely well, with an even brownish patina. External diameter: c. 95mm. Weight: 346g.Discussion: Liss-type bracelets concentrate in the southern counties of Britain, being primarily known from Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. However, examples have also been recovered in East Anglia. Similar bracelets from Northern Europe demonstrating comparable incised decoration infer that these pieces form part of a distinct metalworking tradition, or alternatively were imported from the area.Provenance: found Merton Parish, Oxfordshire, 2018. Recorded on the PAS as BERK-7B524E.
A small mixed lot of detecting finds. Within this lot, an incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axe (c. 1000-800 BC), a Roman or Early Medieval openwork bell, a decorated Early Anglo-Saxon disc type brooch decorated with multiple punched ring-dot motifs (c. AD 450-600) and a decorated copper-alloy Late Medieval dagger chape. Condition: generally good, the brooch treated. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist, from various locations. The axe from Hampshire, the brooch Rochester, Kent, and the chape reportedly a Thames find.
A complete cast copper-alloy finger ring dating to the Late Medieval period, c. 1400-1500. The ring is a signet type, demonstrating a ‘D’ sectioned hoop with a sub-rectangular bezel. The latter is inscribed with the initial ‘R’ (presumably that of the owner) surrounded by three frond motifs. Preserved well, though some patches of roughness. External maximum diameter of hoop: 24.22mm. Discussion: rings of this form with a single initial engraved on the bezel, first appeared in the 15th century. They appear to have been a ‘stock’ design, available to buy off the shelf with various different initials. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
A complete cast copper-alloy triskele fob or mount dating to the later Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 200 BC-AD 100. The mount demonstrates a base in the form of a triangle with rounded corners (one of which is slightly broken), the end of each terminating in a scrolled lobe with a punched ring-dot motif on its underside. Projecting from the midpoint of the fob on its upper surface is a rounded large suspension loop set above a prominent transverse collar. Condition: good, dark brownish patina. Stands to a height of c. 22mm. Maximum width of base: c. 27mm.Discussion: these objects have become more widely known in recent years, mainly through the efforts of metal detectorists. It is thought that they consist an element of horse furniture, probably functioning as pendants or 'hangers' in a decorative role.
Twenty-five miscellaneous base metal detecting finds ranging from the Late Iron Age to Modern periods. Includes: two Late Iron Age La Tene III/Nauheim Derivative type brooches (one fragmentary, one incomplete), an unidentifiable fragment of a Roman brooch, a copper-alloy 'nummus' of the House of Constantine, an incomplete 11th century Anglo-Scandinavian bridle fitting, two Medieval fittings-one with a floral terminal, two fragments of Medieval jettons (one French, one English), five Post-Medieval buckles (16th/17th century), a James I royal farthing, an incomplete 17th century copper-alloy pipe tamper, a 17th century farthing token, an 18th century lead-alloy token depicting a cross, an 18th century clog-clasp, an 18th/19th century Spade Guinea token, a 19th century fair ring, a 19th century sovereign weight and an unidentifiable fragment of copper-alloy.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Anglo-Saxon/Early Medieval brooch of saucer type, probably dating c. AD 450-600. The brooch is circular in plan, the catchplate and pin lug (encrusted with the remains of the iron pin) visible on its reverse face. The front face of the brooch is decorated with a characteristic design for this period: a pellet in ring surrounded by six 'running spirals' The raised outer flange appears to be mostly broken away. Saucer brooches were produced up until the end of the 6th century, a major concentration of their distribution being in the Thames Valley. Found both on settlement sites and in funerary contexts, they appear to have been worn in both life and death in contrast to some other brooch types made specifically for burial.
A complete cast copper-alloy harness ring or strap distributor of probable Late Iron Age or Early Roman date, c. 100 BC-AD 100. The object is circular in plan and circular-sectioned, its entire circumference decorated with nine oval raised mouldings that give a ribbed or segmented effect. Condition: very good, solid mid greenish patina. Diameter: c. 70mm. Discussion: similar objects identified by Spratling (1972, pl. 7, nos. 31-34) and identified as above. This piece is unlikely to consist a terret ring as this would require the presence of a rectangular-sectioned bar enabling the object to be attached to a yoke. Reference: Spratling, M, G. 1972. Southern British Decorated Bronzes of the late pre-Roman Iron Age. University of London: Unpublished PhD Thesis.Provenance: found Ovington, Norfolk, 2013. Recorded on the PAS as BH-29B138.
